Relaxin causes your rib joints to loosen? Who knew!?

Spent 7 hours in L and D yesterday due to excruciating back and chest pain. The doctors all thought it was a blood clot in my lungs (SCARY!) but turns out with all the Relaxin (hormone) that causes our joints to loosen in order for delivery to happen, it causes EVERY joint to loosen...including those that keep your ribs in place. So turns out my ribs had just slipped out of place.

Warning: I have never been in so much pain in my whole life! Hurt to breath, hurt to move, oh man!

I was never aware that it could happen so I thought I would pass along the information Big Smile I'm feeling better today after the doctor prescribed Tylenol, 1 Motrin and lots of ice. No lifting anything for the next week and the doctor said it should be back to normal, just no overdoing it.

(The Motrin was a one time thing...just to get the inflammation to go down long enough for the pain to lessen.)

  • Holy scary!  Glad you know what it is and that you are okay.  Is this why my finger knuckles are killing me?!  My hands hurt!

  • Oh my GOD that sounds so scary!!  You must've been totally freaked out and I'm so glad that you're okay.  So weird to think the relaxin can cause that much pain.  Glad that's all it was and that you're on the mend!!

  • The same thing happened to me 3weeks ago and they also thought it was a blood clot. It took a good week before I was feeling better though. It is EXTREMELY painful and totally scary. They did a chest x-Ray, EKG, and a catscan just to make sure I was okay! Glad you're feeling better!

  • WHAT??!!  I have never heard of this.  How scary for you.  I'm glad they got it figured out and you're on your way to feeling better.

  • Ugh, yeah, but I've had problems with my rib joints before and I knew what it felt like.  The first time I was in such pain that I totally thought I was having a heart attack at 20, it was awful.  Glad you're feeling better!
