Baby Names

Ellie as a mn?

DH's grandmothers' names are both Ellie. We are team green but if this baby is a girl we would like to honor them by using Ellie as a mn.  However, I really don't feel like Ellie is a "full" name and doesn't flow as well with our girl names (Eliza and Gemma).  Both of DH's grandma's given names are Eleanor, and we would use that but DH's fraternal grandma legally had her name changed to Ellie because she didn't like Eleanor.  So there goes that. Right now we are planning to use Elle as the mn, because it flows better but I feel bad not using Ellie.  What would you girls do?  BTW, our last name is similar to Bylord.

Re: Ellie as a mn?

  • I would use Eleanor because while she did legally change her name, Eleanor is still her given name and Ellie is a nn for Eleanor. I wouldn't feel guilty not using Ellie because it makes sense for a person not to want to name their LO using a nn.

  • I would use Eleanor. Ellie is a cute NN, but I do think that Eleanor sounds much better with your FN choices.

  • Gemma Ellie is a nice name.  I think family significance is more important than flow.

  • I would just go with Eleanor. But, if you feel like you just can't, Gemma Ellie sounds fine.
  • I would use Eleanor.

  • I like Elle. I don't see anything wrong with using it as a version of Ellie or Eleanor. It's the thought that matters. You can let your LO be her own person with her own name while still honouring her great grandmothers.

Thank you. We are leaning towards Eliza and I feel out of the three possible mn's that Elle sounds best.

I think this logic works for me too.
