1st Trimester

did your cycles change after you were off bc?

Hi Ladies!

I'm new here, my husband and I just started trying to have a baby. I also posted this on the trying to get pregnant board...

I used to wear the evra patch and took it off the patch the end of july and had my period on friday aug 5 as normal.

My period this time was due on friday sept 1st, usually its early am. Now its sunday night and i have no period. I have taken about 6 tests and they have all come back negative.

I am just wondering.. did your cycles change when you got off you birth control? were they different lengths? my period is normally write on time..

 thank you!

  • I was on the pill and my cycle was every 28 days like clockwork. We went off the pill and I was still every 28 days like clockwork. A little more PMS symptoms than when I was on the pill though.

I only had my cycle messed up when I had miscarriages. But after a month it went back to 28 days again.

  • It depends on the person what happens with their cycle after BCPs.  Mine went crazy and then I developed PCOS.

Also you may want to start posting on the Trying to Get Pregnant board.

  • yep mine changed - they went from 28 days to 32 - 35 days. It can take a while for your body to adjust etc - and some find they don't get a regular period for a while - some have to go to there Dr. to get a jab (sorry I cant remember what it's called) to start their period again. So I would say you are very normal and the waiting game sucks, but it will happen, and if not - visit your doc :) good luck!

  • Mine were not regular for the first several months off BCP. I found charting my basal body temp & using OPKs very helpful in pinpointing ovulation so I knew when to expect my period.

  • Mine really changed, on the pill it was every 28 days before noon, I could set a clock to it. After I stopped taking the pill it added a week to every cycle until it got to 76 days between periods, so then I saw a doctor and he put me on antidepressants and that turned it around a bit. After that it was about 35-37 days between until I got KTFU.

  • I was on the pill for years. I stopped taking them at my last period. I was late the next month and I took two tests one the day of and one a few days later and they were both negative. I never started so I took one more the next week and it was a BFP!!! So maybe...just maybe you could be too.

  • I was on the pill for years, I went off a few months ago to start trying figuring it would take a while to get pregnant (because I have PCOS).  The first month it was 28 days, this month it didn't show up when it was supposed to so I took a test.  I figured ohh, it will be negative.  HOLY CRAP, it was positive.  Everyone is different, check with your doctor
  • everyone's body is really different. some take a few months to adjust.. others don't. I wouldn't worry.. just take a few months and it'll become more regular. but remember not everyone ovulate's the same day as everyone else.. so using an OPK will probably be very helpful too.

  • I went off birth control 8 months before we started trying for a baby. i tracked my cycles and they were anywhere from 26 days to 34 days. when i was on BC it was on the 28th day every time. Good luck! just have a lot of sex!! :)

I remember being in your position though where I thought for sure I was 'late' when I first went on BC

  • The PP's are right...everyone's bodies and cycles are different.

After 10 years on BCP and having incredibly regular periods and 28 day cycles, I went off of them last October. My cycle got longer and longer every month. It was anywhere between 42 to 54 days in length. I didn't bother seeing a doctor about it because I just assumed that the BCP were finally wearing off and my real cycle was figuring itself out.

So...when I started spotting three weeks ago (approx. 3 weeks before my period was "due" according to my new wacky cycle), I started to wonder what was happening. After two weeks of spotting I went to the doc who told me about implantation bleeding (which I'd never heard of before). She sent me for a urinalysis and, sure enough, I got my BFP three days ago! I really didn't expect that when I was spotting...but DH and I are super happy because we had been TTC.

You know your body better than anyone. Listen to what it's saying. Even though my cycle was like clockwork when I was on BCP, it drastically changed when i went off of it. I got several BFNs over the months when I "thought" my period was late...when really, it was just figuring itself out.

Sometimes I think people who are TTC obsess about the little signs that could mean they are pregnant. Give it time.

  • It typically takes your body about 3 months to adjust to not having the bcp hormones in your body.  Be patient.

Are you having any period or pregnancy like symptoms?

  • It depends completely on the person, what their hormones decide to do, and how long you were on the BC. My cycles were exactly the same until I had my miscarriage and since then they have been way out of wack. I would wait a week or so before I got excited. Good luck to you.

  • After BC my first cycle was normal, second was off and then back to normal. So its possible your cycle is a bit messed up. If you have been trying I would take another test in a couple day and maybe ask your dr if its normal.

  • I was on the pill for 10 yrs. Seasonique, but instead of 4 periods a yr I got none. Stopped taking them and AF showed in 3 days and then again 31 days later. Pretty normal for me pre pill. My second cycle off I did get KU but was temping so I do know I ovulated late. I highly recommend temping, charting and using OPKs. Even if you do have a few wonky cycles, you will have some clue as to what is going on!!
