Baby Names

Do you know any German names for girls that are Spanish friendly?

(Names that are Spanish friendly, that is, not girls... well, that too Stick out tongue)

Hi! I'm visiting from the February 2012 board... I live in a Spanish speaking country, but my husband's last name is German, and since my baby is going to be German too I need a name that works in both worlds... I love the name Maren, but my husband doesn't like it. Can you help me?

Tough one, right?Confused

Thanks!

Re: Do you know any German names for girls that are Spanish friendly?

  • Marina would be Spanish friendly and close to Maren.

my great-grandmother (who was German) was Juliana, and went by Julia, which also works well for spanish-speakers obviously.

    Marie/Maria would work too.

I know a woman born and raised in Germany whose name is Josephine, which could work for Spanish speakers.  Her daughters are Rebecca and Sarah (their father is German as well.)

  • Classics like Maria and Anna work well.

Some that might be a little more unique are Elsa, Amalia, and Birgitta.  Julia is a beautiful suggestion, also.

I've had to think about the same thing - my family is Swedish/Irish, but husband's family is from Portugal, and we've been thinking of names from my background that his parents can also pronounce :)

  • Martina is a German name that is Spanish friendly!  :)
  • What about Lena? It would probably go well with a German last name.

Lena Marina would be a beautiful name.

  • Amalia is a favorite of mine. ( ah MAHL ee ah)

It has German roots but it is easily pronounced in Spanish, and its original Hebrew meaning is "the work of the Lord."

  • Ilsa/Elsa

    Anna

Here's a list of names from 2010 in Spain. Maybe you can see which ones translate well to German:

  • My daughter's name is Amalia, which is German, but works for my Italian family and my Portuguese-speaking neighborhood. There's another little Amalia whose mom posts on this board, and I believe they speak Spanish at home.
  • Adela, Agatha, Alina, Amalia, Angelina, Anna, Antonia, Augusta, Aurora, Berta, Bettina, Carla, Catrina, Clara, Claudia, Cora, Cornelia, Elena, Elisa, Eva....

Some of these are also Spanish, but all would be easy to pronounce.

IMHO, I'd stay away from "J" names. Unless you are OK with Spanish speakers calling her Hosephine, Hulia, or Hulianna.

There are also tons of Jennys in Latin America now. They mostly pronounce the J in that case as a Spanish LL or Y--the LL being, when not like a Y, sort like a zsh sound.

Josefina is a legit Spanish name, and in that case the J is an H, but if you choose a name for which there is no equivalent, there are standard Spanish approximations. (Josefina is really pretty.)
