1st Trimester

Anyone who has lost a twin

I know this is a sensitive topic, but I have a question for anyone who has lost a twin in the first trimester.  I want to know if you had any signs that something was wrong and at how many weeks you m/c.  Also, had you already seen both heartbeats?  Thanks for anyone who might be able to answer and I am very sorry for your loss.

Re: Anyone who has lost a twin

  • I haven't lost a twin, but I'm currently pregnant with twins so I've asked my doctor about this. I understand that the chance of losing one goes down after seeing a heartbeat, just like with a singleton pregnancy. At my very first appt we saw a second sac with no heartbeat so she suspected that it was a vanishing twin. Not to worry you, but she said that I would likely experience no signs of m/c and wouldn't even have known there was once a twin there if it weren't for the early u/s.

Baby B ended up just being behind which is why we couldn't see the h/b at the first appt, but I definitely worry about vanishing twin still every day. The Maternal Fetal Medicine specialist told me the only thing I could do was to think positive!

  • I lost a twin at 8 weeks.  We had seen and heard the heartbeat as I was still a patient at the RE.  But we knew from the beginning that something was wrong with the lost twin as it developed slower than the other.  The heartrate was always slower.  I never had any signs, and still have not had any bleeding. At my last U/S there were very little remnants of the sack.  My body just re-absorbed it.

  • i don't know if i would consider mine a lost twin...but...

when i got my first u/s there were 2 yolk sacs and so they told us to expect twins.  we got to see the HB for twin A and they told us that it looked like the 2nd yolk sac would develop more in the next day or two.  when we went back the next week, twin A kept growing nicely and twin B/2nd yolk sac looked exactly the same and just never developed a HB.

i go to the doc tomorrow and i will ask if i need an u/s to be sure that the 2nd yolk sac reabsorbed.  otherwise, i haven't had any signs - no bleeding, spotting or anything.

  • WE lost a twin...I had ultrasound at 10 weeks and they couldnt find the heartbeat on baby B. It was measuring a week behind. So it was very difficult but I had a feeling and I had a weird dream about losing one of the babies. Its called vanishing twin. The other fetus is still there. It should be absorbed by the next ultrasound I was told....

Any questions just ask....but I had no symptoms.?

  • We only knew we had twins for 5 days.  Saw them at 6wk 4dys and baby B was gone by 7wks 3dys.  I had mild spotting...def. not heavy red.  I was still w/ an RE at that point, so I was having frequent U/s's and that is why they caught it so quick.  We had seen both hearbeats, but Baby B's was only at 90, so we were warned it wasn't looking good.

  • I found out yesterday at a 12 week sonogram that we lost one of our twins....Baby B stopped growing at 7 weeks 3 days.  It did have a heartbeat when I had a sonogram around 7 weeks.  I had no symptoms. The remnants of the sac are still there.
