Cleaning supplies? WDU use?

I am trying to cut corners where ever I can to save money.  I know the Duggars (19 & counting or whatever number they are on now!) make all their soaps etc.  What do you clean with?  Bleach mixes?  Vinegar?  I am looking into cleaning kitchen & bathroom areas. Thanks for the info. :-)

Re: Cleaning supplies? WDU use?

  • Bleach is bad. And yucky. And bad. <---- a little soapbox standing on my part.

I clean with Vinegar, Baking Soda, Tee Tree Oil and Grapefruit Seed Extract. (and some dishwashing liquid)

    Bathroom

I pour vinegar into the toilet. Then I go wash/clean the counter, sink and mirror using a spray bottle with equal parts vinegar and water and a few drops of grapefruit essence oil (because I like the citrus-y smell). Then I go back to the toilet, washing down all the outside parts/seat parts/around the floor with the spray bottle. Then I add some baking soda to the toilet and it foams up, and I scrub it. Lastly, I sprinkle baking soda all over the bottom of the tub, drizzle some (just a little) dishwashing liquid over it. Using the spray bottle, I wash the walls of the shower and then squitr the baking soda mixutre. It will bubble up some and I scrub the tub with a scrub brush. Rinse with water.

    Kitchen

I use the Tree Tea Oil to clean the kitchen drains (drip it down and chase with boiling water). Sometimes I pour some baking soda down the drain, then some vinegar, give it a few minutes and chase it with some boiling water. The sink I scrub with the dish washing liquid. The edges of the sink and counter with the vinegar spray. I switch it up and use either deluted tree tea oil or grapefruit seed extract to clean the counters as well. All 3 kills germs, tree tea oil will kill molds and GSE will kill yeast and molds. I also use GSE in my laundry, and you can put a few drops in water to rinse your veggies.

I also will pour about a cup of vinegar in the dishwasher to help clean it, and I pour it into the rinse agent container to help clean the spots of glasses.

  • I love vinegar for cleaning.  It's a disinfectant and gets rid of odors.  I also use it in my laundry, especially to wash anything that gets yucky when the kids are sick.

This book has some terrific recipes for homemade cleaners, and it's available at the library so you don't even have to buy the book.

  • Also - I bought a package of like 75 white rags in the automotive section of Costco for $14 (I think). That is what I use for all my cleaning. They leave a bunch of lint in the dryer lint catcher the first wash, but after that, no problem.

    And, I forgot floors...

I wash the floors using 2 buckets. One with just hot water and the other, hot water and vinegar (1 part vinegar to 2 parts water). I dip my rag into the vinegar water to wash the floor, and the I dip it into the plain water to rinse (and rinse the rag). That vinegar/water ratio is safe for wood floors as well. The hot water will help get up anything a little sticky.

  • Vinegar, hydrogen pyroxide, baking soda. (all from Costco). I refuse to give up my Swventh Gen dish soap, laundry soap and dishwasher soap so I buy mass quantities online and get them for much cheaper than any store. I have a lot of luck with soap.com and Amazon.

  • Be very careful with vinegar and wood products. Vinegar takes the varnish off.

  • Ditto pinktulips. Also Dr. Bronner's can be used for everything, it's kind of expensive but it lasts a long time because you only need a little at a time. I also make my own laundry soap, it's really easy to make and it's way cheaper than store bought.
