cold cuts?

Is anyone eating cold cuts?  I was told not to because of bacteria.  I'm dying for a turkey sandwich!!!

Re: cold cuts?

  • The risk is listeria, I have a friend who actually got it while pregnant and it was terrible, but it is VERY rare.  If you want lunchmeat, stick to stuff that is fresh and just microwave the meat and it will kill anything that could get you sick.

  • I'm not a huge fan of coldcuts because of all the sodium and preservatives in them - but if you're dying for a turkey sandwich you can buy turkey cutlets at your supermarket and just cook them (roast/poach/or even stovetop) and then just slice or shred them for your sandwich.

  • I had a turkey sandwich for dinner two nights ago, and didn't reheat the meat (gasp!!).  Just try not to make it a habit, and only eat meat from a source where you know it's fresh (not the taco truck down the street).

  • I was also told not to, and I've so far stuck with it and don't really miss it much. I really would force myself to eat cold cuts because they are easy to pack for lunches, but I've never been very much of a fan.

The only time I super miss them is on sub sandwiches. Do you have Jimmy John's by you? They have a very yummy veggie sub (w/o sprouts cuz those I was told are off limits too) that I crave just about 24/7 :)

If you're seriously craving some turkey hardcore, I can't see the problem with heating it up to kill any pesky bacteria, then pop it in the fridge to cool it back down so it's not so weird.

  • I was told to buy fresh as possible and microwave

Don't buy the packaged stuff...go to the meat counter and have them slice it for you

  • I had a couple of subs during my pregnancy after the first trimester was over and had them a lot once I was a few weeks away from delivery. My LO is fine, but you never know. The best bed, other than heating the meat (ew) is to get it at a deli, and eat it that same day. That's what my OB said. So if you want one REALLY badly, get a small amount at the supermarket and go wild!
