Skipping the "sippy" cup?

I have tried 3 different types of soft spout sippy cups and DS doesn't want any part of it- I don't think he can figure it out. I've tried drinking out of it and that shiz is hard to get out. I know for a fact he can drink out of a straw, so is there any real reason to do a sippy?

  • We went to a straw cup and skipped the sippies. I don't think there is any harm in that. I mean some kids go straight from bottle to cup and the world doesn't end.

  • DS never took a sippy until after age 1 when we took bottles away.

  • We do an open cup. She never took a bottle or a sippy. She's getting quite adept at holding it herself.

  • I dont' think so. A lot of kids skip them completely and just go to a straw or open cup.

The sippy feature is for our (the parents) convenience. Not the kid's.

  • LOL.  Your baby is 6 months old. Give it some time, he'll figure it out.

  • Well, thanks for that vaguely rude comment, Totty. I realize he will get it. I would just like to skip over the frustration for both of us.

  • With both DD and DS we skipped the sippy and went straight to straws.  No problem, and they caught on to the straws much faster than the sippies.

I wasn't trying to be rude, I just think it's dumb that as soon as babies hit 6 months, and go in for the pedi appt ... pedis are like, start the sippy, NOW. I don't get why though, because their little motor skills aren't anywhere NEAR ready for something like that ... so yeah, they throw shiit around and get frustrated.

And 'skipping the frustration' isn't going to be an option when he learns how to speak, how to write his name, and how to drive a car ... it is what it is. Get used to it. Give him the sippy, if he throws it on the floor for a month, so be it.

  • I bought two kinds of sippies, one with a soft spout and one with a straw.  DD caught on to the straw-type sippy almost immediately, so I've been sticking with that.  We also let her "practice" sipping out of an open cup, though she mostly just bites the rim of the cup or plays with the water in it at this point.
