Who does this?
Pediatrician suggested it today. DS is doing great and gaining weight well but (and I'm sorry if I don't explain this well) DS is very tall and is gaining weight well. But in relation to his height and weight hes not "chunky" enough, a teensy bit thin...Pedi would like to see him a little bit...chubbier.
Dr said there is no problem with his weight gain or health, just that as an FYI if we wanted to supplement with formula...its totally okay. Dr also said something about if we aren't going to supplement, to get DS a vitamin with iron and Vit D,but if we supplement not to worry about it since its in the formula.
What does this mean? Should I or shouldn't I? I love BFing and I pump and BF so often that I'm certainly not concerned about my supply dropping. Just wondering if there is anyone else on here that BFs 90% of the time and maybe gives their LO one bottle of formula a day. If this is a common thing or not.
Re: Supplementing with formula?
First, I wouldn't supplement if his weight gain is fine and BFing is going fine. Just give the vitamin D drops.
LO gets 75 breast milk and 25% formula. But, that's because he has to take a high calorie formula. That high calorie formula also has extra calcium and phosphorous. Since he didn't stay in long enough, his bones didn't ossify, so he needs the extra calcium and phosphorous.
Breastfed babies are often not chunky to start with. They generally grow faster the first couple of months and then slow down. Go to kelly mom and search breastfed baby growth chart. Lots if doctors know very little about breast feeding. No need to supplement just to have a chunky baby.
We'll miss you sweet Debbie Girl (4.21.12) and sweet Cindy Girl (8.9.12)

He may have suggested the formula in order to get Vit D. - My Pedi mentioned the supplement as well as we are heading into the "dark season." If he gains weight nicely no need to supplement. Shame there are no vitamins in Ginger Ale
.
Seriously though - unless your kid is not thriving I would not feed formula unless for convenience sake.
first bold: yeah he did mention that.
second bold: That is a bummer!
She really shouldn't have fessed up to that dare so quickly...it would have been funny to see where that post went....
