April 2012 Moms

How much weight gain are you anticipating?

I was told yesterday that I should expect to gain 25-30(!!) pounds.  This seems like SO MUCH.
I'm not underweight but not overweight (5'8" 145lb) but this seems like a lot!  I want to be healthy but I don't want to struggle to shed the excess weight post-baby.

2nd+ time moms: does this seem normal?

Re: How much weight gain are you anticipating?

  • I'm a first time mom but 25-30 lbs is definitely normal and healthy if you are currently in a healthy weight range. People who are overweight can gain less, and underweight can gain more. I'm hoping to gain around 25 but I gain weight so easily so I'm afraid it will be more. My friend recently gained 80 lbs! Although that is not typical, it's possible.

  • 25-35 lbs is normal...totally normal.  Many gain more than the "normal range"

I gained 67 w/DD#! (that was 7 lbs 10 oz 21.5").  Lost it all and then some in 9 months

42 w/DS#2 (that was 9 lbs 6 oz 20.75"...I looked like I was carrying twins...got asked that all the time)...just lost it all before we conceived again it took me 9 months.

So if the pattern of gaining less each time continues I HOPE to gain 25-35 lbs...I am shooting for 30.

I am not worried...I will lose it all again...as I get older it may become more difficult, but it is worth it. (Oh and because I am high risk I was not allowed to exercise...not even walking)

    I am 5"7" and my normal/happy weight is around 130-135 size 4/6

  • Yes thats the suggested amount, especially for someone of a healthy weight. I was overweight when I got pregnant (exact same weight this time too). I gained about 20 lbs with DS and it was all gone by my 6 weeks appointment. Hoping to keep it the same or less this time, however I am no where near as sick as I was last time (knock on wood) and I'm really worried about how that will affect it! I'm really going to start watching myself.

this...I was 128 PP w/DD and probably also due to the reason I gained 67 lbs (normally around 130-135).  I have a friend VERY overweight...she was told to gain 5 or 10 lbs the entire pregnancy, something ridiculously low...she ended up not gaining anything...and actually last weight check she went down a pound! I don't understand it...the baby, fluid, placenta, etc weigh what like 8-10 lbs? How is it possible to not gain anything and still look VERY big, belly and all.

  • I'm underweight, so I'm supposed to gain 35-40. I don't really see that happening, but who knows? Maybe my metabolism will do a 180 now that I'm pg.

    Right now I'm down 2. :(

  • It is hard seeing those numbers go up. I am only 5'2 so at almost 150lbs at the end of my pregnancies I felt huge. I gained 30-35 with each of my kids. The first 20 comes off in days. It took me a little time to get all the weight off, 5 months with my first, 8 months with my second but I don't feel like I was doing anything special. I just went back to eating normal (although larger portions because I was nursing) and normal exercise and the weight eventually came off.

  • Thanks girls, it makes me feel a bit silly for asking the question now, hah.  But it also makes me feel not as bad.

At least looking like a big puffy version of me will pay off in April!

  • I think that's pretty normal! I'm hoping to gain around that much. I'm 5'9" and normally weigh 140....so I guess I may be up to 170 by the end of this! It's okay....I will do it all for a sweet baby!

Son 4/27/12, Son 10/15/14, Daughter 9/29/16....Baby #4 due 10/09/19!  Apparently we get really bored in January ;)
  • That's plenty normal. I actually ate reasonably well... I hated chocolate for much of the pg so that helped. Smile I'm 4'11" and gained FIFTY pounds. It was all gone by probably 2 1/2 months pp. Not that things looked anywhere near the same, but the weight itself was gone. My mom is 5'6" and gained just shy of 100 pounds with my older sister. She was born at 28 weeks even so that weight went on fast. She went back down to her normal toothpick frame and is still super skinny to this day. My Dr. actually said to eat healthy and don't worry about the scale. I love my OB. :)

  • I gained 20lbs with my first, 23lbs with my second and I'm anticipating 20-25lbs this time as well.  It's a totally normal and reasonable amount of weight to gain.  If you are heavier, you should gain less, thinner, more.

My BFF was underweight and ended up gaining 50lbs while eating totally healthy and running through her entire pregnancy.  Her body just gained the weight because it needed to.

  • I gained 38 with DS, too much for me. I'm only slightly overweight, so I really only need to put on about 20 lbs. That said, DS was 9lb6oz, so I know that this baby will be close to that too.

    I'm aiming for 20-25 tops.

  • With my first I was 125lbs (5'7"). I gained 60lbs and had lost half of that by the time I left the hospital (baby was 8lbs 2oz 21 inches). It took me around 8.5 months to get back down to 128lbs. I'm already doing better weight-wise this pregnancy so I'm hoping to keep the weight gain to no more than 30lbs.

  • I'm in the same boat. Although with the m/s its making it easier. I've actually lost 3 pounds. My dr said the aboslute most I could gain is 20 but she doesn't want me to gain anything. And she just had to point out that I didn't lose the last baby weight. "Thanks alot I hadn't noticed......" Oh well.

2nd+ time moms: does this seem normal?

If you gain the recommened weight you will lose about 15-20 lbs instantly when you have the baby (baby, placenta, amniotic fluid, other fluids).  So you should only have about 10-15 pounds to lose and if should come off farely quickly if you breastfeed and excercise and eat right.  I am 5'7 and I gained 32 pounds with DD1 (started 148 ended 180) and 26 lbs with DD2 (started 152 and ended 178).  I have started at 137 this time so I hope I only get to 170 tops but we will see.  I haven't been eating the greatest Stick out tongue

  • My doctor told me on Tuesday she would like me to ONLY gain 25 lbs and no more.  I am not over weight, but I am short and petite.  I have about 5'2" and 115 lbs.  25 lbs doesn't seem like a lot compared to what I have seen others gain.  Wish me luck!
  • Last time it was a solid 40 lbs. Not great. Hoping for a lot less this time!

  • I hoping to hit 25 this time.  With my first, I had him at 36 weeks and only gained 17 pounds.  It was all gone within the week I had him and my stomach was perfectly flat.  25-30 is the recommended amount for someone of a healthy weight.
  • hmm I'm guessing 30lbs or so but who knows! I've never been pregnant before so hard to say how my body will react. My sisters who are similar size to me (I started at 5'2 and 110) both gained about 30lbs or so.

I'm excited to have a pregnant body though- I think it looks beautiful!

I've gained a few already due to first trimester horrible eating and inability to exercise due to exhaustion, but I'm guessing in a few weeks my appetite for healthy foods will return and I can get back to the gym... We'll see :)

  • I'll be interested to hear what the doctor tells me.  I'm slim at a normal weight (my weight is higher than I look because I have a big frame and am muscular) and am hoping to keep it in the 20-25lbs range.  I think as long as I stick to my normal diet (and don't continually let myself give in to these cupcake and nacho cravings), I should be able to do that.  I also plan to be active as long as possible.

I'm not going to lie, I'm vain and I want to bounce back quickly after baby...but of course, that is far from being the most important thing.
