I just want a rocking chair! Does it really have to cost...

as much as my whole living room set to get a nice looking rocker/glider or recliner for my nursury?  I refuse to pay $500-$900 for a chair I'll need for a year or so that likely wont match anything else in my house!  I just want a remotely comfortable chair to rock this kid to sleep in if she even likes being rocked to sleep.  I've seen some on Craigslist, but they're hideous or have uncomfortable looking wood frames.  Why can't I just pick one and fork over the dough?

Somebody else please tell me you had this problem and what the heck you did about it!

  • We bought a LazyBoy rocker/recliner for the living room - $300 bucks!
  • Loading the player...
  • We found a really cute one at Walmart for $159.We didn't want to spend too much either since it was just going to sit in the nursery.

  • I got a plain old fashioned rocker from an amish furniture shop, and a lovely pad/cushion from BB&Beyond. Total cost = $60

  • We bought one of the high back glider ones at BRU for $300 and had a 20% off coupon.  I love the lower back real cushy chairs - but I'm like you - I can't see spending $700 bucks for a chair and ottoman seperately when we could get the whole set for what we paid.  Where have you looked??  Have you checked BRU?
  • I bought a nice glider that will match other stuff later.  We just got in a neutral color that will go with the rest of the furniture.  Also, I plan on leaving in the baby's room for a while, I can still see myself sitting with her, reading to her in it a year or two from now.  It was expensive, but its something that will last and its super comfortable.
  • I got a nice sturdy rocking chair at a flea market for $20 a few years back.

  • Well, my dear! Sorry you aren't having much luck. I just bought mine from walmart. I didnt get to sit in it, but it felt comfy when I touched it, lol. It was only $119 online so I thought that was fair. Plus, the customer reviews werent bad. GL to you!!

  • I think you can find what you're looking for.  It took me awhile, but I finally did.   We got a fully upholstered glider (the kind that look like a living room chair) for like $380 and I even was picky and upgraded the fabric (bought it at a local furniture store, not a baby specialty store which I feel marks em up).  BRU has them for like $379 and you can use coupons to get 15 or 20% off and they're super comfy.  And I didn't spring for the ottoman.  I couldn't justify spending an additional $200 on a stool when it would barely fit in the room.  I'm planning on getting or painting a little wooden stool and that should work fine.

I saw wooden rocking chairs for $99 (then you'd just have to find a nice pad for it so it's comfy).

  • We wanted one but were having a hard time justifying the cost of a nice one. We ended up registering for an upholstered glider in chocolate brown. My hope is that it will hold up well and we can move it to the living rom eventually (we planned so it would match)

BUT, why do you think you will only use it for a year? I loved the idea of the upholstered chairs because i imagine giving DD her bath and getting her ready for bed and then snuggling down in the glider with her for her bedtime story. Thats years of good use, and well worth a few hundred dollars. In the end , we were lucky. My very very generous BFF actually bought the glider for us for our shower. But if you have the money and find one at a reasonable price, i'd say splurge.

  • So glad you asked this! I was online looking for one 2 days ago, thinking the same thing. I decided on getting a rocker/recliner lazyboy type thing after the new year when all the prices are crazy slashed. :)

That's a great idea!  I just hope I'll have time to get it since I'm due on the 14th of Jan.  But I was thinking of doing this for other larger items on my registry that haven't been purchased by then.  I guess I just need to be patient and keep my eyes open.  BTW I did see a few on Costco's website that looke decent, just not sure about buying it without sitting in it.  Hmmm...

  • I found a used Dutalier glider on Craigslist ($90) - it was dingy and dirty but I know the brand is high quality. I bought some fabric that I love ($95) and then had the chair reupholstered ($135). Good luck!

  • Just keep searching and keep your eyes open. I'm sure you'll find something. I got a used upholstered rocker from Plow and Hearth for only $150 (originally $400). I found it on craigslist.

My sister bought a lazy boy recliner to use in her nursery.

Have you tried your local consignment stores? Sometimes you can find some nice upscale furniture items in some of those stores.

  • Yea my last thing missing in my nursery is a rocking chair. ?I'm hoping to get a good sale one during the holidays.?
