Infertility

Maybe a very stupid question

Please don't judge.  Yes, I have had unprotected sex with guys before I met my husband.  With all the blood tests that the OB/RE did and have done, if there was a potential possibilty of an STD (yes gross and very scary) would it have shown up?  I mean none of the doctors ordered an STD test...ever.  So, am I supposed to say "hey I was silly in my 20's and made a few mistakes, test me" or, would something be off on the tests and paps?  Again, please don't judge, I wish I was more careful when I was younger Embarrassed  I obviously have no symptoms but, what if I had/have one and that can be affecting everything.  I'm really embarrased to randomly bring this up to the docs....

Re: Maybe a very stupid question

  • All of my initial blood tests with both my OBGYN and RE included STD tests.  I am surprised your doctor did not screen you for STD's as an initial thing to rule out???

  • First of all, I am sure there are several women on this board that have not always been very careful in their past.  That said, I do remember that they did an HIV test for me and DH but I don't recall them doing an STD screen.  They could have, I just don't remember.

I think you should ask what type of b/w screening they do before you start - although this info may be spelled out in any literature they give you.  And if for some reason they don't do an STD screen, I don't think it is a bad idea to ask for one any way.  You would hate to be in a situation where you were exposed to something and had to deal with it while PG.

ETA: my GYN did a screen before sending me to the RE (who is in the same practice).  So my RE had that info before and just did the HIV test.

    TTC since 3/07. IVF#1 = canceled. IVF#2 = 0% fertilization. IVF#3 = BFN. IVF#4 = c/p.
    Moving forward with Adoption 2017!
  • My RE does do testing for STD's. I would ask to be tested just for peace of mind!
  • I'm going to call the RE now, I think in reality, it should be checked out.  Just in case (omg i certainly hope not!)
  • HIV, chlamydia, and gonorrhea were required at both my clinics.

  • I just spoke to the nurse.  She said as long as my paps come back normal and I don't have any symptoms, they won't do the std testing until we go for our first round of IUI where we would both have to go. Hmmm...I wonder if I should call my GP and ask her to do it.

Me too.  They won't do any treatments at my clinic without current testing (annual).

Try not to get too worried about it, chances are you don't have anything.  And as bad as it sounds, don't beat yourself up even if you do.  I remember when I needed a LEEP a couple of years ago and my DH got all weird that I had been exposed to HPV (which upward of 90% of sexually active people are) and I just said that for all we know, it was him that exposed me to it!  I am not promoting "blame shifting", I'm just saying that you shouldn't be too hard on yourself.  Good Luck!

  • Thanks bfarrell.  I left a message for the nurse at my OB's office.  With the message I left, (kinda saying, why wasn't I tested thus far), they will probably do it.  I think I'm just looking for piece of mind. You know, it's always been like in the back of my mind that "what if" but, I was always afraid too.  If I do have something, it should be dealt with immediately....not matter what.  Very scary!  Sure wish I didn't do all I did 10 years ago, you know.
  • Try not to be to hard on yourself! I am sure that there are plenty of us who have made those mistakes, but it is what is. I would just ask and it's something that needs to be done regardless. IMO.
