Maryland Babies

Weezie

Since Sydney moved to the toddlers room, she also comes home famished and thirsty. She has always loved to eat (like her momma!) so I chalked it up to that, but you are right that they're probably so busy playing that they don't eat as much. I see on her daily reports what she eats, but I guess she's burning calories and keeping that metabolism going at a high rate :)

Re: Weezie

  • Yeah- I think she is so busy she doesn't notice until she is forced to stop...  you know, when we get in the car to go home.   It is only about a 10 minute drive home, but  Evie howling for food before I can even unlock the door!

The last 2 nighs she hasn't even wanted to play outside when we get home she just goes to her highchair and says eat-eat.  Today I sent in an extra snack and asked them to give it to her at about 4:45-5pm, so that she isn't ravenous when she gets in the car.  Hopefully that will help.

  • Butting in... Talking about 2 different age groups here, but I cannot tell you how many parents I have that mention this to me at the beginning of the school year w/ regards to their new kindergartners.  The new environment/peers can really cause changes to a kiddo's eating/drinking habits and how busy they are during the day.  It's not at all unusual for new kindergartners to need to be watched carefully during lunch to make sure they're eating/drinking as they need to be b/c they're so busy socializing.  They play SO hard at recess, then the rest of the day is just go-go-go, so they're exhausted and starving by the end of the day.  I'd bet it's the same thing happening w/ your LOs.  The good news is, usually once they settle into their new environment, their eating/drinking habits do rebound and it won't be quite as much of an issue (although parents do usually tell me that their kids are still really tired at the end of the day, but not starving from having gone all day w/o eating as much as normal).

And for my nerdy side, I have to say I think it's fascinating that this can occur as early as your LOs' age!

  • Also butting in- when I watched the 2 boys in my house I felt like they ate all-day-long!

The eating thing w/ them really started once they made the switch from 2 naps to one nap.  Their mom packed them lunch but I provided snacks. I usually did some dry cereal and a cheese stick in the morning so they had some protein to get them through to lunch.

re: what Pastor'sWife posted- my DD is only 3.5 but I am worried about all day K for the reason you wrote- my DD is a grazer- she is on the small side and she has never been one to eat a big meal and I am terrified of how she will do when she only has the chance to eat once over the course of a school day.

  • @Pastor's Wife- From the baby room to the toddler room they go from sitting in highchairs to sitting at a table.  Right now it is really new for her to be able to get up whenever she wants so she ends up eating just enough to satisfy her hunger, but not enough to really fill her up.  Like you said, I am hoping that after a week or two she'll settle into the new routine.

@Daisy- My sister is having that issue with her youngest.  He just started pre-K on Monday and it has been tough.  He is a grazer AND a slow eater so it has been pulling teeth to get him to sit and eat in the morning.
