Houston Babies

Okay, now my Evan is sick - is something going around?

Evan woke up crying/moaning at 4:00 am with a fever of 102.2. Poor little dude was burning up. So far he doesn't have any other symptoms. Other than a fever reducer and more fluids is there anything I should do?

Oh, and when do you call the Pedi? I know I should call if he has had the fever longer than 3 days, but that puts us in the middle of the holiday weekend. Would you call today or wait?

  • Because of the holiday weekend, I'd call today and try to get him in today or tomorrow.   It is probably just some sort of virus that he has to work his way through but you don't want to be in the ER or walk-in clinic this weekend!

We've had way too many weekend ER visits because of ds getting sick on a Friday and me not calling the ped.

    Hope he gets better quickly!

  • If you need him to be seen on a weekend, you can also use an urgent care facility.  It is a gazillion times faster and cheaper than an ER and if he isn't in dire need, it is one less person in the ER to hold up the people who are in dire need.

  • There is a pretty good urgent care place near us that his doctor suggested for weekend, non-emergency illnesses, and we have used them once before when he had an ear infection.

After one does of Tylenol and 3 more hours sleep, his temp is now 99.5. I think we will keep track of him and if his fever goes back up we will call the doctor's office this afternoon since I am sure they are closing early Friday for the holiday.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that is a 24-hour thing. He is downstairs watching Sesame Street with DH and I can hear him talking up a storm, so I guess he doesn't feel that bad.

This.  I'd wait.  Chances are it's a virus and there's nothing to be done now.  The way I see it rushing him into the Dr right away is just a waste of time and a copay. We spent Memorial Day Weekend at the emergency clinic, it was no biggie and not expensive either.

Yeah, you're right. I was just worried because he slept until 9:00 AM and he never sleeps past 7:15. The longer he is up the less sick he seems. We'll just make sure he gets plenty of fluids and rest today. I am going to make sure he doesn't over do it today.

I keep hoping it will get easier when he can talk and tell me why he doesn't feel well. I'm not good at guessing. Thanks for the reality check.

It's so hard not to worry, especially when they can't really verbalize what's wrong. But then they turn into 2 1/2 year olds that won't stop talking and tell you every 5 seconds "I be sick" while he writhes around on the couch. We all have colds and apparently G is working on his man cold skills early. =)

I hope Evan is feeling better soon!

I am sorry you are all sick, but that is hilarious about G. I wonder if it is genetic or learned behavior. I'm sure I could get grant money to start a research group to learn the origins of the man cold.  :-)

  • Strep is going around. So is some sort of stomach virus. Those are the only things I've heard about.

I usually take them in for a strep test when they get fevers, unless I know it is something else.

  • Well, he had a bit of an upset stomach this afternoon, but ya know, he hasn't wanted to eat or drink much of anything today. I just thought it was because his stomach hurt. Maybe his throat is bothering him. He wanted nothing to do with his juice today but then ate a bunch of yogurt. Hmmmm. Maybe DH can take him in tomorrow just in case.

Thanks for letting me know that is going around. Until he can tell me what is bothering him I have to try to read his mind, which I am horrible at.
