The girls hate being in high chairs. And I mean, HATE.
We just bought them a Step2 plastic table and chairs and I am going to try to see if they prefer that, though I am sure they'll try to get up 4,235,765 times each meal.
When did you move on from the high chair, and what was next? Just a booster seat at the regular table?
Re: when did you stop using high chairs?
Good question! I am ordering booster seats this week b/c mine hate being in theirs too. Somehow Nathaniel tonight slipped his arms out of the buckle and stood up in his highchair. We have a little table and chairs and I tried a few meals at it but they were more interested in playing and getting up!
A good friend of mine suggested these b/c they strap under the chair, around the back of the chair, and around their waist.

We stopped using the high chairs probably around 15 mths or so. they hated being in them. We started using the booster seats for awhile. Then my parents gave us a mini table and chairs. So they would sit there and eat their meals. They did get up but I kept reminding them to sit back down and they actually liked sitting there.
We stopped using the booster seats shortly after they got their table. And now they sit on the regular kitchen seats when we all sit at the table together. Of course they usually end up sitting on our laps at some point during the meal.
But for some reason, they still use the high chairs at my moms house. And they love sitting in them. Anywhere else (like a restaurant) forget it.
I'm ready to be done with high chairs at 20 months. I really like the look of these boosters and have heard great things about them.

They're a little pricey, but I figure we've got a good year or two of using booster still.
(sorry it's not clicky-chrome won't let me)
My parents are buying the girls youth dining chairs as an early Christmas present. Its a wood chair that is taller than a normal chair, and will allow them to sit at the table with us, but looks like a "grown up" chair. They have them at their house and the girls love to sit at the big table there.
They're getting these and finishing them to match our dining set: https://www.youthchairstore.com/product_detail_3862_2930.aspx
This is what we did with Max but used the FP booster seats instead of the space-savers. The only thing that stinks about that is the mess he created on the table but with a placemat it wasn't too bad. He was around 18m and we did it because he despised his Chicco highchair.
We have the healthy deluxe booster seats that strap in, but we still use the trays because they smear and smash their food everywhere still. Sigh.
But the entire time they are strapped in, they are fighting it and wanting out. We'll try the new table tonight. They saw it in the box today and clapped for it.
After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!
We have these too. Sometimes we use the trays and sometimes they just sit at the table. DD#1 is almost 3 and has been sitting in a regular chair w/ no booster for a few months now. We have a little table too and use that for eating outside.
For DS1... and for the girls, I bought the Peg Perego high chair. I love it, b/c you can stop using the tray...and adjust the height of the chair so it just wheels under the dining room table.
I have the 1st years booster seats for the girls as well (in case we have dinner at my sister's house. and they strap to a regular DR chair.). I would just make sure you get a chair protector from BBB to save your seat/fabric from food messes.
The best investment I have made table wise~is... I have a custom piece of thin glass on top of my dining room table. Then, no matter how messy... it's easy clean up. Just windex away.
