I just spent an hour cooking a really nice meal - pasta, home cooked ham with homemade carbonara sauce only to find the recently added (and melted) parmesan chesse is unsuitable for pregnant women as its made from unpasturized milk.
DH ate the pasta, i'm eating plain pasta with canned beans & left-over ham which I was going to use for sandwiches. BOOOOOOOO!!
It was like a taunt - 'UNSUITABLE' - Grrrr! Why did I not read the label before adding it!
Re: Unpasturized Cheese
Oh dear lord. Parm cheese is fine. It's aged forever, and it's rock hard... not a soft cheese in the slightest.
And do you seriously, and I mean this as a real question, think that because it's melted it somehow transforms into a "soft cheese"?
How much did you put on there?
Yah I would probably eaten it to SummersJuly!
Ditto. In fact, I've eaten quite a bit of it since being pregnant.
Yea - I don't recall ever having to be worried about parmesan cheese.
1. parmesan is not a soft cheese and is fine whether it is pasteurized or not
2. it was heated enough to melt so even if it was a soft cheese, it should no longer be a concern.
It doesn't matter, it's aged like a billion years.
the concern over pasteurization only applies to dairy products such as soft cheeses and milk, not hard, aged cheeses like parmesan.
and even if it is an unpasteurized soft cheese, if you cook it, it's fine!
Erm, excuse me but I know very well that it doesn't 'transform' it to a soft cheese, i'm not 12.
I know that regular parm cheese is fine, HOWEVER - THIS brand of cheese actually said on the label not suitable for pregnant women.
I am not being an a$$ about my pregnancy, I foods that other people consider off limits & drink wine if I feel like it.
I will not eat something that specifies that you can't eat it when pregnant - thats just stupid.
But the only slightly tempered eggs (if you made a true carbonara) didn't concern you? <eyebrow>
it wasn't clear from your post who you were actually replying to.
I'm not asking if its ok, i'm not saying i have to go puke it up, i'm not even asking a f*king question.
Even 1st tri are throwing their 2 cents in.
So what all of you are saying is if the label said, word for word, UNSUITABLE FOR PREGNANT WOMEN you would go ahead and eat it anyway? would THAT not be a little irresponsible? And more to the point would you enjoy it?
BTW - I didn't add egg yolks so I guess it wasn't a 'true' carbonara for whoever replied that.
I have never seen food with that on the label before which is why I was commenting on it.
I was wondering the same thing??
I would have. I ate parm cheese jsut the other day on a home made pizza
Bwahahahahaha!
Even Tylonal says may not be suitable for pregnant women and its the only thing a doctor will recommend. They are put on there as a precaustion not as a law.
** Tylenol and Precaution*** Sorry bout the mispelled words today.
nonetheless, if you cook it, it is no longer a concern, since that's all pasteurization is anyway.
So - let me get this straight.....you eat foods that other people (doctors maybe?) consider to be unsafe AND you drink wine while pg.....but you wouldn't eat a little parm cheese because you read it was unsafe on a label? This seems a little odd to me.....
I'm sure wine is considered unsuitable for pregnant women, but you stated that you still drink it. No big deal. If they put that on the label, it's usually just as a precaution.
It's actually illegal for unpasturized cheese to be sold in the united states commercially. Where did you buy the cheese?
I am with you - I wouldn't have eaten it. Better safe than sorry, since babies do die from listeria, rare as it is.
From WiseGeek.com: "Unpasteurized cheeses are actually legal, as long as they have been aged at least 60 days in an environment held at 35 degrees Fahrenheit (1 degree Celsius). During the aging process, the cheese becomes more acidic, killing most potential sources of bacterial infection."
NEWSFLASH: There are labels on alcohol bottles that say not reccomended for pregnanty women
Yet you drink wine? Hmmm you don't make much sense at all!
This is exactly what I was thinking. I mean, look - we all try to rationalize why we do some things but not others while pregnant. But to say that you didn't have the cheese because of the label but you do drink wine (which also has a label cautioning pregnant women), well....you see why we don't get it? No biggie though either way. Just enjoy your pasta next time if you feel comfortable with it. Or not!
Uh, you can buy all sorts of unpasteurized cheese in the US. Cheese MADE in the US must be pasteurized.
