Did you give up...

...caffeine?

I didn't.  I mean, I do feel like I cut back majorly. I only have one cup each day (though, I'm guessing it's more like 12oz and not 8oz), it's pretty weak, too.  But, I'll occasionally have a soda in the evening.  I don't think I was this bad with DS and I'm not terribly worried about it...just wondering who's in my same boat!

Re: Did you give up...

  • I did in first trimester. Now I try not to have more than one or two caffeinated drinks every other day or so. I don't think it's all that big a deal, but I wanted to cut back anyway.

  • I cut back a LOT.  I went a long time without coffee bc it made me sick.  :-(
  • I'm not going to lie. I drink caffeine. My dr said it was worse for me to drink a regular soda than worry about the caffeine. She said to just make sure it's diet when I drink it.

This exactly! I just started coffee again this week and I have a diet pepsi everyday.

  • I drink my coffee in the morning and maybe 2 or 3 times a week I'll have a soda or another coffee during the day. I used to drink multiple cups a day so I consider it a major achievement. Well, you know - that and kicking the crack habit : )

  • I haven't been drinking caffeinated coffee (decaf still has a little caffeine though), and I've had the occasional Coke. Most of my caffeine comes from the massive amounts of chocolate I've been eating... So I guess my answer is no!

  • I switched to decaf coffee but will drink iced tea and soda when the urge hits without a second thought.

  • DH works for a coffee roasting company that make amaaazing coffee, so giving it up was tough.  Luckily they make good decaf though, so I've been drinking that or green tea in the morning.  No caffeinated sodas or iced tea for me though.  At this point I don't really feel like I need caffeine anymore--it was the first few weeks that were tough.

  • well....i dont drink any caffeine...not soda, no coffee, not iced tea....and that isnt because of this pregnancy....its because i get terrible palpitations and sleeplessness with it....

my motto is that i want to be able to nap at a moments notice...and i dont want anything to keep me from that!!

  • Good question!  I was just thinking about posting the same question this morning when I went to the office kitchen for my usual cup of coffee.  I either fill my mug about 3/4 full of decaf and then top it off with caffeinated stuff, or the other way around, depending on how my morning is going so far ;)  On the weekends I generally have a cup of regular.  I try to stay away from caffeinated pop too, but mostly because by the time I want one I've already had the coffee and figure one is good enough.

  • I cut back on it a few years back, it gives me really bad heartburn.  I don't drink any and I eat a little chocolate, so what ever I get from that.

  • I don't drink coffee, but I do drink soda.  I asked my OB about it, as I was concerned that my one "unhealthy" habit was the worst possible thing I could possibly do while pregnant.  She told me that she herelf drank one cup of coffee in the morning, and a diet pepsi at lunch every day when she was pregnant with her own kids, and that I should not beat myself up about it.  I do try to drink it in monderation.  One maybe two sodas a day.
  • I actually drink more now than I did before.  I rarely ever had caffeine before-- only what was in my foods.  But since my BFP, that's been a craving-- a nice bubbly soda (which about half the time I do caffeine free ones), or a latte.  But it's like once every week or two at the most.

  • I drink a diet coke every day for the caffeine. I tried to give it up but I was getting terrible headaches. I don't worry about it or feel guilty :)

  • I gave it up when we were TTC DS, stayed off of it during that pregnancy, and only had it a couple times after he was born before we discovered that he would get a rash when I had caffeine (and citrus, tomatoes, etc.), so I got rid of it again while I was EBFing, and then never really added it back in.  I'd have a few caffeinated drinks per month, maybe, but that was it, so I haven't really had anything other than chocolate in the way of caffeine during this pregnancy.

It may change over the next 3 days, though, as we attempt to paint several rooms in our new house, prior to moving in Saturday. Stick out tongue

  • I did when pregnant with DD #1 until almost the very end when I started craving wild cherry pepsi. Actually I had quit caffeine about 2 months prior to getting pregnant with her. This time around I have been able to give it up so I just limit myself to a soda here or there. I don't have it daily. Probably 2-3 times a week.

  • I have not had any coffee or soda (other than lemonade which is caffeine free - Not sure about other brands but the one I get is) this entire pregnancy. The most caffeine I have had is from a chocolate bar!

Before my BFP I practically lived on diet coke however to be honest, I havent fancied it during my pregnancy.

Coffee on the other hand is a different story - It is the only thing I miss from my pregnancy cutbacks. It is like torture

Its all down to personal preference though and to each their own - I think everything is fine in moderation, its just down to what you decide to do as an individual!

  • I drink my 2 cups of coffee every morning. Some mornings it is only 1 cup, but I used to drink 4-5 cups of coffee a day. My body just naturally stopped wanting it so much. And some days I have a Pepsi later in the day...like today. but Pepsi is my biggest enemy and I had a serious addiction to it, so it is best if I keep away from it in general. Pregnant or not.
  • I cut waaay back in the first trimester, but have been indulging in a soda or tea once-ish a week. I still try and do sprite or root beer, but sometimes I want a coke!

This exactly.  In fact, after going cold turkey for a bit, I don't even really have a taste for coffee anymore, so it's been easy to cut back.  Caffeine-free Coke is a lifesaver!

  • At work they have coffee out for everyone so I would usually have a cup or two everyday but it was never an addiction for me, so fortunately it was pretty easy to give up. I had maybe a few cups in the first tri when I was so exhausted all the time, but nothing since then. However soda has been a pretty a pretty huge addiction for me and I'm super proud to say that I've only had one can of soda all to myself at a party. It was sooo good! I figure I may as well try and kick the habit now if I can. I will sneak sips off of DH's soda though. :)

  • I've tried to cut back, before I could drink a whole pot of coffee to myself. But with the pregnancy, my caffeine need has gotten "pickier", if that is even possible. For instance, I love Diet Coke but now I only think it tastes good if it comes from a can, not the fountain. I LOVE coffee, but can barely get through a single mug if I brew it myself but I have no problem drinking something delicious from Starbucks or the local coffee kiosk. It's weird. I still drink tea occasionally, but not nearly as much. And definitely no green tea anymore, since I was told it is bad for the pregnancy...or baby, or something. So I just don't drink it.
  • I gave up caffeine almost 2 years ago because my Dr recommended cutting it out because I get terrible migraines.  It actually helped.  I went cold turkey from drinking a venti sized Starbucks latte a day to nothing.  Occasionally I will have a sip or two of Coke/Pepsi (once every blue moon), but it made it nice not to have to worry about quitting once we started TTC.  It's nothing I fret about though.  If I wanted a can of pop I'd let myself have it.

  • I've never been a coffee drinker (and it is not agreeing with my stomach these days anyway), but I do have about two diet cokes or one iced tea a day, usually.  I tried to give it up completely in the first tri, but my OB said not to worry about it so much.

  • I cut back more in the first trimester. Now I usually have a half decaf coffee every morning. I don't drink pop, so I don't think I'm getting a ton of caffeine anyway - just whatever there is in my half cup of regular coffee and any chocolate I consume! I figure I'm not excessive, so it's ok. I need a little SOMETHING in the morning.
  • I pretty much cut it completely in the first trimester, now I'm back to either half caf or a cup or the real stuff.

  • I avoided it through first tri and had horrible headaches every day. OB recommended 2 extra strength tylenol to get rid of them. A couple of weeks ago, I started having a pepsi or an iced tea with lunch and voila--no more headaches...and I'm still way under the recommended limit for daily caffeine consumption:P

One of my friends just got pregnant, and she and I were talking about the different diet changes.  She asked me what I was doing about chocolate, and I laughed at her.  Now of course, I felt bad immediately (b/c if she wants to cut out chocolate, more power to her), but I just couldn't have survived without my nightly bowl of ice cream.  Some days that was the most calories I could get in my body.

Anyway, back to the OP.  I didn't drink any caffeinated beverages in first tri, and now I'll drink on 2-3 times a week (usually a tea), because I really don't want to be dependent.  I used to never drink any caffeine, and it was nice.
