paid maternity leave

I noticed in my below post some people disagreed with taking paid leave and then resigning. I don't really see the problem with it but that's just me. Let's discuss this, what are your thoughts?

No.  It did not.  I know it was rhetorical, but I will answer so that there is no confusion.

  • Do you hate your employer that much and want to stick it to them? I would be so happy to have any paid leave, that I would be respectful about it.

Your taking advantage of it could make the company say f*kc it, and cancel the paid leave they offer and then you screw over all of the women that come after you.

Providing paid leave is optional. Providing leave is not optional, but you normally have to collect disability. I think taking advantage like you suggest is just slimy.

  • The topic of my original post was "are you planning to work after baby is born" it seemed like the post was being derailed into a debate about taking maternity leave money. Since some people were discussing that I started a new post. Now those that want to chat about the money can post here instead of clogging up the other post therefor freeing up space for posters that want to answer the original question.
  • These are my thoughts-

    imageMandyBrownNoser:
I think it's rather douchey to take fully paid maternity leave when you have no intention of going back.

    imageroxianne15:
I plan to take the paid leave and just add the money to our savings. Its basically free money so its not douchey.

I agree with MBN that it is wrong to take the paid leave and then not return.  It is not free money, it is a benefit that is offered by your company.  A benefit that you get for working for them.  If you leave and do not come back, you are no longer working for them and should not receive the benefits.

I know that my company does STD for maternity leave, but, the employee must return back to work.  If the employee does not return back to work after receiving the paid leave, they must pay back the money earned/received while on STD.

    And

Actually when you put it this way, it sounds even more douchey.

They are giving you that money in anticipation that you will be returning after your leave is up. It's not just free money that you can take from them and then be like "thanks, see ya!"

I don't see it that way but that's fine. I'm sure people have taken the money and not returned before. I work for a pretty large company so I doubt it will bankrupt them.
You might want to look into what and how your benefits are offered.  Like I said, my benefits require you to return back to work or you have to pay back the money you received.

Roxiann - Its people like you that bring bogus wrongful termination claims. Employers aren't just bank accounts with unlimited funds. They are running a business and you are their asset, not a child they are required to take care of.  Maybe you and your husband should be better about saving money you actually earn.

  • I think it's wrong. It says a lot about someone character to purposfully deceive their employer.

If I was not returning I would have told them right away and helped find/train a replacement for my position. To me that's the right thing to do. I never think it's ok to screw anyone over for any reason. But hey, maybe I'm just a nice person.

  • My Company offers NO paid leave at all because someone just like you did this to them years and years ago. So yes it is highly messed up and wrong and thanks for being that person who screws things up for others who do things the right way.

  • What is sad is you are talking about taking advantage of your employer and there are thousands in the unemployment line that would take that job.

I agree with OP its douchy.  You should either tell your company you plan on not coming back and see what they will do for you (ie make you use vacation or sick leave) or just dont do it at all.

There were a few women that tried to advise against it, and yet you, Roxianne, seem to still think it is ok and seem to still plan to do it.

  • Is it douchy to leave after maternity leave even if you were already planning on quitting anyways b/c you were moving out of state?

I mean, if you were in the middle of your PG and were ready to move but could wait until after the baby came (b/c you didn't want to change doctors in the middle of it), would that still be douchy? (and assuming you've been with the company for 7 years?!)
