LO won't empty boobs

So this is new.  I can't get my LO to empty the breast.  About halfway through he gets really fussy and starts moving his head from side to side.  He won't relatch usually and if he does he pops off in a really hurting way.  Sometimes if he seems like he is going to start doing this I will give my boob a squeeze and he will stay on a little longer but not always.

It's not because he is full either since if I switch him to the other side he will continue to eat for a while.  His poop has become dark green and mucousy so I know it's a problem.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

Re: LO won't empty boobs

  • It's funny because I have an overactive let down at the beginning resulting in LO choking and gulping air, but within 5-10 minutes of feeding he's fussing like the flow is too slow.  I try to do breast compressions which usually helps.  You can also try switching back and forth between boobs when he starts fussing.  Have you tried burping him when he comes off?  This sometimes helps as well.  Hope this helps!!!

  • Maybe he's getting impatient waiting for your next letdown.  Try doing compressions the whole time and see if that works.  Or take him off, burp him, and put him back on the same side.  Kellymom also has suggestions on triggering a let down.
  • Sounds like gas? My LO would do that a lot at around 4 weeks and I finally started being much more concious about burping her. Every time she pops off like that, I sit her up, burp her, and then put her back on the same side. Once it starts to feel empty I let her switch to the other side. She needs that hindmilk, so I keep putting her back on the same side if it's just gas making her pull off (that's why the poop is green most likely!)

  • I think he's impatient waiting for your next letdown.  Switching breasts often during a session is one way to remedy it, compressions is another.  You could also pull him off, burp him and then put him back on...it may trigger a new letdown.

  • I think when it turns green, he is getting too much foremilk.

I mostly EP, but have been trying to nurse DD more to regain that bond and keep a strong latch (I never stopped nursing over night).  Sometimes when she does that very thing, I just strap on my BrestFriend pillow, stand up with her, and she does so much better.

So, maybe you should try changing positions when does this too.  Standing up, shifting holding position, etc.
