We also got the fabric bins to go with it. We have 4 bins and 5 open cubes. Books fit nicely in the cubes and we can throw toys and stuff in the bins.
We did the same thing. I also have a 6 cube one laying down the long way next to it. I have a bunch of bins for smaller toys and then books and bigger toys just go right in the cubbies. You can kind of see it in the background of this pic:

We have a "room divider" from Costco that came with canvas totes for $120. It's super sturdy and can go either vertical or horizontal. Really happy with it after 2 years, so we bought another one when we saw them in the store again (for the next baby).

Same here. We have the 9-bin version with 6 cubbies open for books and 3 canvas bins for toys.
I have the same one in espresso color. I have 4 seagrass baskets that fit in the bins for smaller things. Mine is actually in the family room.
