Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

How many 13 month olds not talking at all

DH is worried that DS doesn't talk yet. I'm not concerned cause I know all babies develop differently. He's very physically developed, crawled early, walked early, ate table foods early. He can wake, he shows us stuff and he plays very well independantly. But DH is worried, so.. How many of your 13 month olds aren't talking yet?

Re: How many 13 month olds not talking at all

  • My 15 month old isn't talking yet.  So, yeah.

  • Mine and I know my 2 nephews are the same.
  • DD had maybe 1 word at 13 months. Around 20 months she started learning at least a word a day. Now she has a huge vocabulary and speaks non-stop in 3 to 4 word sentences. Your LO is still young, don't stress it!

  • DD is 16mo in a four days.  No words.  And no worry from myself, my husband, or our doctor.  She communicates everything she needs to without words and the handful of signs she has.  She's not going to talk until she *needs* to. :)  (Just in the past day she's started repeating our sounds very intentionally and using conversation appropriate babble, so it might be coming soon, but it might not.)

  • No real words out of my little guy's mouth (we don't do signs either). The only distinguishable word he says is "No" and it is rare to hear. I am not worried about it, but do wish he would start talking to be able to communicate what he wants and how he feels.

  • My 14 month old isn't saying a word.  I'll admit, I was a litle worried until I did some research to calm my nerves!  BF isn't worried in the least bit.

Edit: 14 MONTH old, not 14 YEAR old. Embarrassed

  • My LO says "Ba" for everything. This weekend he just started saying "dada" but it doesn't have meaning to him yet. When we tell him no he shakes his head so he knows what that means. He signs milk but doesn't mean it everytime he signs. So we are just all over the place.

  • DD2 didn't really start talking until about 15.5 months. Not even mama and dadda.

Now she's talking like crazy at 17 months. The changes at this age can happen really quickly -- it's amazing the difference that 2-3 months can make. Maybe going to the next pedi appointment at 15 months will help your DH worry less.

  • At 13 months DD barely said anything.  By 15 months she had tons of words and now at 18 months she is talking up a storm (hundreds of words, putting 2-3 words together at a time, etc.)

It can change VERY quickly! don't worry!

  • My daughter wasn't talking at all at 13 months, AND wasn't early in any other area either. She's fine, has a lot of words now.

This blog post was very comforting to me at the time:

  • My son sounds like yours. Early w/ physical stuff, but not talking. He sort of says cracker but only for his dad. And I'm starting to doubt that. Nada for me.

  • Um, DS is 17 months and only has a few words.
