Baby Names

john/johnny?

what are your thoughts on this name?  DH has now said that our previous pick (Jack) is out.  I wish he'd just cave and go with Liam... so now I'm looking at other options.

  • I don't like John, but I love Johnny. I think it's super-charming.

  • John is a great name. It's strong, classic, and simple.

DH's family is littered with Johns, so we wouldn't use it (also, I feel it's kind of boring for our taste). But it's a wonderful, underused option right now. Go for it! It's way less popular than Liam, too.

  • I think John (or Jonathan) is a great name.  I would use Johnny as a nn, not a full name.

  • John's a great, classic, and currently underused name. I think it would make a fine contender for any name list.
  • My H is Jonny (Jonathan) so I'm a little biased, but I love it.  Retro and charming.  And I love that it comes up a lot in popular culture (songs, literature, movie characters).
  • I really like this name. I feel like it's one that will never go out of style.

  • I'm not a huge fan of 1 syllable names. But it's classic, strong, masculine. If you like the sound, you can't go wrong. It's also my dad's name and his father's name. I also quite like some of the other versions of it, like Ian or Ewan.

  • I love John. It was my grandfather's name and my dad's name, and it was the name we were going to use for a boy. It's such a classic and strong name.

  • John is a great name. ?Plus, Jack is a nn for John if you still really like Jack ;-). ?I have a little boy at school whose name is just Johnny and it always strikes me as odd. ?It's cute for a little boy but I think it's nice to have the formal name as well.

This. And I really like John over Jon.

I like the spelling Johnathan and have him go by John.

  • I love John! It is in our top 3. Not a fan of the NN Johnny though, and for this reason we will probably go with George (MN will be Henry for whatever we choose).

  • It's a great name! Very traditional. Cute for a little boy but still great for an adult.
