Travelling abroad with an infant

My DH's aunt is getting married in mexico in the middle of January. Is it reasonable to take a13-15 week old baby to this? We would be there for about 4 days. I really would like to go. My H would be there photographer and taking the pictures for there wedding, so he is going no matter what. I am just concerned about getting the birth certificate fast enough, and a passport for the baby since we will need to fly. Am I crazy to think that this would be reasonable?? I keep going back and forth between thinking that it is crazy, and thinking that it will be awesome. This trip will be paid for because of the photography, so I think that is making me lean towards wanting to do it. I'm just not sure if I am being bias because of that though. Thoughts please. :)

  • my first cousin took their 2 month old to Mexico for my other cousin's destination wedding. It won't be easy but if it's an important event to you then it's doable for sure. Just have everything ready so you can send in your passport application right away after she's born (you can expedite the passport delivery for a fee too, just in case). Also check with your pediatrician to make sure she's property vaccinated for going to Mexico and that the doctor feels comfortable with it.

  • We are hoping to go visit my family for Christmas, and will need a passport for our little guy - from everything that I've read, it's entirely do-able in the time frame - so middle of January should be realistic for you as well.  The only thing that would really concern me would be the malaria risk - obviously babe will be too little to get any sort of protection (I think - someone please correct me if I'm wrong).  I think that if you feel strongly about being there, that you should give it a shot.  It might not be much of a vacation for you though!

  • I'd do it in a heartbeat.  We plan on getting our LO a passport very soon after birth and traveling everywhere while she's still a baby.  Both of us have most of our families overseas, so we'll be doing tons of overseas travel in the next few years.
  • When they are that little it is much easier to travel with them then when they are older - say 6 months plus.  We traveled from Japan to the US with our DS and it was very doable.  We applied for his passport right away and got everything in 6 weeks.

So much malaria can be prevented with mosquito nets, you could protect that way. Same with the dengue, those mosquitoes fly at night. You could put her in a stroller or car seat with a net draped over. Also, if you are in A/C, that would be sufficient protection.

I don't think many anti-malarial drugs are good options, but it's based off of my non-medical knowledge. According to Dr. Google, larium, doxycycline, and malarone look like they aren't suitable. However, "chloroquine and proguanil may be given safely to babies and young children, but the doses used are much smaller than those recommended for adults." I don't have any experience with these two.

  • Thanks for the input everyone. We don't need to book right now. I was mostly just concerned about getting a passport in time. It's something that is important to us, and I don't totally expect it to be a vacation. Although there will be tons of family who I know will want to hold the baby a lot.

Good point to double check with the pediatrician about shots and all as well.
