artificial sweeteners

So DH & I are talking about cutting way back on caffeine, more than we already have. We're daily coffee drinkers but it hit me this morning, what about the sweetened creamer I use? I read artificial sweeteners are to be avoided during pregnancy (Splenda, etc), so it got me thinking about what I ingest everyday with coffee. It's got polysorbate 60 which is a form of sweetener but I'm not finding much on it being artificial. What have you heard about sweeteners, sweetened coffee creamers, etc and what precautions are you taking?

Re: artificial sweeteners

  • They are fine in moderation.

  • The only one that you should avoid completely is Sweet n Low. Aspertame should be avoided as a daily thing but you can still have some. Splenda is one of the safest artificial sweeteners anyway. Let me see if I can find the article I read about this.

  • You can still have a little aspartame on a daily basis. It takes very little of it to sweeten a soda, coffee, whatever.

  • I am diabetic and have to drink diet pop (which has aspartame or splenda), and I drink probably about 4 glasses a day of it. It's that or water and I choose the diet drink.

  • As long as it's in moderation I do pretty much everything.

  • Thanks everyone and thanks for the link countrygrl!!
  • A sweetner I like (may be somewhat new) is called Truvia. It's plant based and its sweeter than sugar! Nothing artificial. Google it if you'd like. I love it!

  • Before they started Truvia, you could get stevia liquid at the health food store. My dad is borderline diabetic so it was great for him. Mom finally started growing her own stevia. So I would think that would be the safest sugar substitute. But it isn't in a lot of things yet.

I LOVE Truvia. That's all I use. I even put it in cakes, cookies, cereal....anything.
