Please tell me that teaching = being active

Because I am exhausted when I get home and cannot find the strength to work out. The whole standing up, walking around, being "on", using crazy hand movements and body gestures, and even talking loudly wears me out. And by time I get home, I just want to lay on the couch, eat, and go to bed by 8:30. I'm lucky if I get in 1-2 workouts a week.

At least I have energy on the weekends to get in a real work out :(

Re: Please tell me that teaching = being active

  • Absolutely!  I was way more exhausted as a teacher than I have ever been as a SAHM.  Last year when the school year started I was about 26 weeks pregnant and I think I worked out for about 2 or 3 weeks before stopping all together.  I didn't get back into it until this summer!

  • I taught through my first pregnancy and will continue for this one and I am definitely exhausted by the end of the day. I'm still considering trying to work out after school but it's definitely a hard sell right now. For the last pregnancy I gained a healthy amount of weight and I ate whatever I wanted (think lots of desserts) so I think teaching definitely helped me keep the weight under control. This time around I'm trying to be healthier about eating and I've actually dropped weight during these first few weeks.

  • It definitely counts! And given that I spent this week chasing a student through the school and restraining him from hitting me, it's the most active week I've had in a long time!

  • I hope so! This was my first week back with the kids, and I must say, I'm exhausted! I can't even muster up the energy to take Ella for a walk when I get home. Hopefully I'll get out for a run at some point this weekend.

  • I'm a sped teacher and I sort of count it as being active. I am constantly walking from one class to another, chasing kids, and running across the school when there's am emergency. But I still make a point to go on a 15-60 minute walk after my after school nap every day.

  • I teach high school, and I don't stop moving from 8-3. Plus, I must walk miles around the school going from classroom to copy room to lounge. I totally count it as being active!

  • Ugh, we just had inservice Thurs and Fri, and just doing that, I couldn't find the energy to work out!  I don't know what I'm going to do when school starts either!

That being said, I feel very very blessed that I've been able to have the last few weeks of nausea in the privacy of my home, and hopefully SOON I won't feel so nauseous all day!!

  • I think it counts!  I am very active walking around in my classroom and to and from the school office.  In the last 6 weeks or so I've only gained 2 pounds (considering I've been eating EVERYTHING).  As tired as I am, I also HAVE to take my dog on her 15 minute walk too.

  • Most definitely!!  I stayed home with DS for 3 months at the beginning of last school year and when I back in November, I lost the remainder of my pregnancy weight within 3-4 months and I totally contribute it to all the walking and being on all day long.

  • Oh yes teaching wears you out.  I have older kids and with them a lot of it is mentally and physically exhausting.  It's my first week back and I didn't make it to the gym any this week.  I'm going to give it a shot next week, because I remembered that I usually never worked out that much the first week of school when I wasn't pregnant.  The main stumbling block is the afternoon nausea.  It's so hard to work out with that feeling.

  • I hope it counts!!  We're back to school this week as well and this is my first... plus we're not to the point where I can really tell people so it will be tough to hide my exhaustion!  Usually getting back into the routine after summer causes me to go to bed by 8pm each night to begin with... I cannot imagine how I will feel with a busy week with kids AND a bun in the oven!

Thanks for the validation ladies!!  And good luck as the school year begins! :)
