Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Tongue Tied, anyone have it snipped?

DS is almost 7 months and we are going to the ENT tomorrow to have it snipped. I wish they would have done it when he was a newborn, but he didn't have any latch issues.

It's severe enough, that the doc said we can do it now instead of waiting until he's 2.

What was your experience? How long did the pain last?

  • DD's was done when she was 5 days old. She couldn't latch and the doctor finally realized that was why. It was REALLY quick and she only cried for maybe a minute (and I think it was more b/c we had to hold her in one place). It was a million times harder on us than her. The flip side is now she can stick her tongue out really far :)

  • Olivia's was snipped when she was about 2 weeks old. We had major latch/feeding problems. Plus, the pedi said it was better to do it now than to wait until she starts talking and we realize she has a speech problem. It was a SUPER quick procedure. She cried for a couple seconds. No bleeding and she was totally fine. Much more traumatic for me and DH. :) Good luck!

  • DS had it snipped a few days after he was born. He wasn't latching properly....and still didn't want to latch after so I was stuck exclusively pumping for 6 months. He didn't even cry or move when they snipped it. The doctor was surprised because he didn't even flinch. He wasn't fussy or in pain after it either.
  • We did at around 3 months.  We weren't having any issues but decided to have it done anyway to make sure that he doesn't have any oral development problems.

He only cried b/c they were holding him down and holding his mouth open- afterwards he calmed down fairly quickly and didn't seem fussy afterwards so he didn't seem to be in any pain.  I think they said that there aren't any nerves in the skin they're clipping, so it shouldn't hurt afterwards.

When I researched, I found that tongue tie runs in my DH's family- it is genetic, and it is more common in boys.  So I'll make sure to have all our babies checked at birth now.
