Baby Names

Is this a stretch? Re the name Wren.

This is totally hypothetical since I'm not pregnant and we haven't even 100% decided to try for #3 yet.

But if we have a girl in the future we would like to name her Wren.  The name has a ton of family significance (my grandparents met during WWII in England, my grandmother was a WREN - Women's Royal English Navy) and as I have gotten older I have decided it would be awesome to have a woman in the family with that strong historical name.

One idea is Wren Elizabeth (we love the name Elizabeth and it is a family name on DH's side).  The other is to name the baby Lauren and call her Wren.  Is that a stretch?  Wren as a nn for Lauren?

Thoughts on Wren?  Lauren?  Wren as a nn for Lauren?  Am I crazy?

Re: Is this a stretch? Re the name Wren.

  • love it!!  the family significance makes it extra special.  it sounds like it fits with your other children's names too.

fwiw, i know a little boy named wren--his full name is lawrence.  it seems like a perfect nickname for lawrence/lauren!

    good luck!

  • While Wren in and of itself is NMS, I am IN LOVE with your reasoning behind it. I would use it 100% if I had the same situation. I wouldn't even bother with Lauren if it were me.

I have a friend who has a daughter named Wren Elizabeth, so the combo sounds good to me.

  • I would switch it to Elizabeth Wren. Wren is not a very pretty name. Kind of like the name Marge. But I get your significance but its fine as a middle name.
  • I personally love that name.

    Agree.

ETA: Wren is sometimes used as a nn for Katherine, but I wouldn't worry about it. It's more obscure than having daughters named Elizabeth and Betty or something like that.

  • I love Wren and the significance behind it. I think if you wanted to use it as a nn for Lauren though, you totally could!

    I love Elizabeth and Lauren.

I think Lauren might be the way to go and call her wren if you want...that way she has an option.

As a Lauren, I hate the idea of the nn Wren. I'm not a fan of Wren in the slightest but I think Wren Elizabeth is your best choice. Love your other kiddos' names.

  • I would probably go with Wren Elizabeth.  If at some point in the future she didn't like Wren, she could always go by Elizabeth.

  • I love the reasoning behind Wren, how special!  I'm not crazy about the name itself though, and most people won't hear this reasoning.  I think Wren could be a great nickname for Lauren, and Lauren Elizabeth sounds beautiful!  Also, someday if DD decides she doesn't like being called Wren anymore, Lauren is a beautiful, dignified and professional sounding name.
  • I really like Wren and actually suggested it to my sister a while back.
  • I like the name Wren, but more so as a middle name... I like the fairly common combo Harper Wren, personally...

  • I think if you like the name Wren you should use it especially if you have a good reason behind it, but personally (since my name is Lauren) I wouldn't like the nickname Wren.
  • LOVE IT! I love the idea and the meaning behind it! Wren sounds like a great girl name because its not something you hear everyday and its unique!!! However, if you're hesitent about naming her Wren then I would go with Lauren and us Wren as a nn! That way you have the best of both! I would have never thought about Wren as a nn for Lauren, but I think it totally works. Very clever!Smile

  • Wren in and of itself is great (I used to hate this name, but now I really love it) and your reasoning is awesome. What a fabulous story for her. I also think Wren as a nickname for Lauren works, but I'd just use Wren, personally. That's the name with meaning for you so that's what you should use. Wren Elizabeth is lovely.

  • I also know someone who named her daughter Wren Elizabeth, and while its nms, it suits her.

I love the family connection to the name.  And for that reason alone, I would use the name Wren.

I personally hate when people pick out names strictly for a nn.  I think if you want to call your potential daughter Wren, then you should name her Wren.  I think naming her Lauren and calling her Wren is a stretch (and sorry, but I think it is silly-I mean I get how you are getting the nn Wren from Lauren, but ew).

  • I like Wren by itself, no need to use it for a nn
  • I think it would work for you, especially with the personal significance. It's NMS though.

If you did do "Wren", I would pair it with something really feminine for a MN...like "Rosemarie" or something.

  • I have a friend named Lauren but its pronounced like Ralph Lauren (La-Rhen).  But everyone thinks her name is Lauren and in school they called her that.

  • I don't think NN have to "go" with the name. I also don't think they have to be shorter. Just something fun to call your LO.

I don't think it's stretch at all. I love Wren all by itself also.

  • Wren is my favorite name if we have another girl, and I am super bummed that DH doesn't like it.

I might still fight for it if it becomes necessary.

Wren as a nn for Lauren is maybe a little bit of a stretch, but not a bad one.

Personally, though, I would just go w/ Wren Elizabeth. It's lovely.

  • I think just Wren Elizabeth is really nice!  If you do choose Lauren, I think it's more likely that she'd spell it Ren...as in Ren and Stimpy, which I find very unattractive.

  • I'm a Lauren, and my nn has been Ren since I was in hs.  When I was in college I roomed with another Lauren and went by Ren so frequently that's how I started showing up on rosters.

Personally, I LOVE the name Wren, and would not even bother with Lauren.  But know if you wanted to, the nn is there!

    Good choice!

  • I LOVE Wren. It's always been one of my favorites, but my uncle, cousin, and cousin's son all go by Ren (nn for Renato, that side of the fam is Filipino). So I'll never use it because there's already too many! I love the WREN acronym too. I wouldn't bother with Lauren...Wren is lovely on it's own! Despite what some pp's said, I think it's a really pretty name.

  • I love the name Wren! I always try to think for literary references for names and this one makes me think of "Summer Sisters" by Judy Blume. There's a minor character named Wren.

  • Wow, I didn't realize there were so many Wren Elizabeths out there!  We chose the name Wren Elizabeth for our daughter because I thought it sounded lovely, Elizabeth is my middle name, and we thought Wren was very unique.  It's funny getting on here and seeing how many other Wren Elizabeths there are!  I love the significance behind the name for you, too!
