Does your LO "talk"?

So I was reading the website someone linked about first year milestones, and it lists "talks when others are talking" as a 7th month milestone.  What exactly is this referring to?  DD will carry on "conversations" with us for minutes at a time, "sings" when others are singing, and talks on the phone (while trying to hold my Blackberry to her ear; it's the cutest thing ever).  She seems to understand how people take turns speaking and pause before responding, which my child development class says is one of the first things babies pick up about communication.  So what does it mean by "talks when others are talking"?

  • Eliza talks all the time. It's adorable. We took a video. I should really upload it to FB.
She talks to me and I talk back. We take turns and she makes eye contact. I'm not sure what they mean when they say talks when others are talking. I would have to read the article.

  • It says 3rd month is "talks" when spoken to.

I don't know how that's different than their 7 month milestone. Owen "talks" all the time. Lots of sounds and coos.

  • Andrew loves to "talk".  It's so cute!  He will babble for the longest time whether we are listening or not.  I have so many videos of it!  He loves to "talk" back to you when you carry on a conversation with him.

Yeah, I guess I'm just confused as to what the difference is.

  • I haven't read the article but LO talks to us in the normal flow of conversation, however, when two people are carrying on a conversation and no one is paying attention to him he starts to "coo" and if not paid attention to he'll do it even louder until someone finally pays attention to him! it's really funny!  Can this be what they mean?
  • Hmmm I'm not sure unless it means a participative exchange at 7mos versus simple mimicking at 3mos. That's weird.

  • Audrey loves to talk. She talks and pauses and if I don't respond she gets upset. She doesn't understand that objects don't talk and gets mad when the turtle by the changing table doesn't have a conversation with her.

  • My DS loves to "talk"! If we talk to him he'll just coo and laugh, I love it.

Violet talks to the giraffe on her activity mat and expects it to talk back too.  :)  It's really cute.

Jane also does this to the hanging monkey on her mat!  I just think it is adorable!

  • My daughter Alisha "talks" all the time. Especially in the mornings when she first gets up. When I put the phone up to her ear when her nana is talking she "talks" back. Idk but it seems like these kids are doing things a lot faster now a days.
