Any working moms only nurse in the evening and morning? No pumping at work...

I will be returning to work when DS is 4 months old. I would like to EBF until that time. I will not be pumping at work because my job is very demanding and I just don't want the added stress of pumping at work because it will mean taking more work home with me and having less time for DS in the evenings. Anyways, I have a couple of friends that nurse and pump in the mornings and evenings only, and their LO's are given frozen/pumped BM supplemented with formula and solids while in child care. I plan on doing this when I return to work. I will obviously need to implement this a few weeks before I go back so we can see how it works and get DS used to it. How do I go about adjusting my supply to nursing/pumping in the mornings and evenings only? What kind of schedule should I have? Also, DS used to take a bottle of expressed milk just fine and now he is fighting it. How do I get him back on the bottle so he can get used to it before I go back?

  • I tried it with DD because my body did not like the pump. My supply tanked and she was on 100% formula by 4 months.

  • I just started the regiman on Monday.  Nurse in the morning (one side), then pump the other and nurse the other side in the evening and pump the other.  That milk he gets at daycare and then the rest of the bottles I send are formula.  On the weekends I'm going to try nursing 24/7, but not sure how my supply is going to work out.

  • Your LO may be a little young for this to work, but you will only know by trying.  I did this, but my LO was 9 months when we started it.  I nursed him morning, evenings and once overnight (so maybe 3-4x per day) and all weekend.  I never had any supply issues.

Thanks! I am interested to see how it works for you!

  • I don't pump at work anymore either.  Around 6/7 months I stopped pumping at work once DD started eating more solids (and dropped one of her bottles).  This is how I've managed to maintain my supply - I pump one side in the morning while I'm getting ready for work, then I nurse DD on the other side once she wakes up.  I use the milk from that pumping session for her bottle during the day.  I pump in the morning, even on the weekends, and then use the weekend milk or my freezer stash to supplement any extra ounces I need during the week (I usually pump 4-4.5 ounces each morning, but DD takes 6.5 ounce bottles so the extra 8-9 ounces over the weekend really helps).  Then I exclusively BF over the weekends.

So basically, DD nurses in the morning, evening when I get home and before bed.  She mostly eats solids at this point while I'm away at work, plus one bottle.  This works really well for us, but she's also a little bit older now and enjoys eating solid foods.

When she was younger I would actually pump and drive on the way to work (sounds crazier than it actually is), and then pump while eating a quick lunch.  It was the only way I could do it without impacting my work schedule and having to bring a bunch of work home with me each night.

I have had friends that have successfully nursed while home but supplemented with formula during the day - but everyone's supply is different.  I would at least try it before jumping to formula only if pumping at work isn't an option.
