Is it silly to "save toys" for siblings?

There are lots of toys that Lilly doesnt play with anymore and Owen isnt at the age where he enjoys them yet so they just sit there and waste space. Do you save everything or do you figure between future birthdays and holidays there will be more toys than you know what to do with? I ask bc we live in a small townhouse and I feel really overwhelmed with clutter lately....most of it being toys.

  • We don't do it with alot of toys but definitely with some that were either expensive and still in good condition or with the ones that have some treasured memories with it.

  • I go through the boys' toys once every three months. I get rid of the broken ones, or ones missing pieces, also donate some I know nobody will play with anymore. I have saved some of the more baby toys for LO when he arrives.  But, like every birthday and holiday, they always get more cause their interests change.  Like DS1 is more into playing games and video games, so we got him a Leapster Explorer for his b-day.

  • We pretty much keep it all.  I just recently got rid of the teethers and rattles that DD3 no longer played with.  We have a big house though.  We have a toy room downstairs and a LOT of the toys are there.
  • We are planning to save toys for siblings.  It does feel like it will get cluttered pretty quickly though, so I may change my mind in a couple years.  Get back to me down the road :).

  • We keep everything. To us, it seems wasteful to get rid of something and then get it again.

  • My DD is 2 and I intend to keep any toys that are in good condition for the next child. It seems so wasteful otherwise. And as long as the 2nd (or 3rd) child is young enough to not care about getting new things I think this is the way to go. With baby #2 if I have too much stuff I'm going to start asking for swim lessons or membership to our local kid play place instead of toys.
  • We're keeping everything, obviously - Some things they are 'both' playing with now. lol  Love it.  If the kids were spaced further apart, I think I'd still keep it.  If you sit down and think about the money you spent on all the toys, it'd be reaaaaaally wasteful to get rid of them and then buy new.

  • I've kept everything, but I box up what's not in use, and also have three rotating boxes of what is in use. We also have a really small house but luckily generous cupboard space. This past Christmas DD2 got half pre-owned and half new. She was totally happy with that, and I saved some money and was environmentally friendly! Oh, also, we rarely buy toys ... Only what family brings or sends as gifts or as rewards for DD1's sticker chart. Toys, like everything, are exorbitantly expensive here.

  • We've kept it all so far.  I do need to go through and get rid of ones missing pieces, though.  I figure we'll get rid of them once dc2 is done with them because I'd hate to buy all new.

  • I kept the things that were played with a lot that were in good shape and could be easily cleaned (no teething toys, nothing plush). But from what I saved, I gave away about half to a friend's foster child.

  • I give some things away and save the bigger items or new things. I have picked up lots of toys at garage sales and thrift stores, so I don't feel bad giving them away.

  • I kept almost everything, broken or happy meal toys get thrown out when I come across them. Will hoe out as needed when LO receives toys. Saved clothes too. Just got my baby stuff back out and DD started playing with them all again.

  • I keep them all.

I find my 2u2 play with the same toys. I rotate toys out as well as they get boring. Something my 20 month old got tired of becomes interesting when it goes away for a few months.

  • I keep everything unless it is a duplicate toy, broken, or missing pieces.
  • I have been selective about which toys I have kept, and have probably kept about 1/3 of them.  Some of my toys were purchased new, and some were sales from Craiglist.  I sell my used toys on Craigslist and  I use the money to get more toys.
