Just curious. With DD, I was induced at 42+1 (I was really holding out for my planned water birth, but DD was apparently very cozy). After 10 hours of labor, DD wasn't doing well and I was being monitored the whole time. They broke my water and it was full of blood and meconium. DD's heart rate plummeted and I had an EMCS 10 minutes later. I was really disappointed I didn't get the birth I wanted, but glad DD was ok, and in the end, my CS recovery was very easy.
I am now pregnant with no. 2. My doc said I should try a VBAC, even if it means being induced. I am just scared my body will never go into labor naturally on its own, but I am trying to tell myself that all pregnancies are different and I shouldn't count my body out just yet. I just don't want an EMCS again. It was so scary. If it's going to end that way, I'd rather just schedule it. I'd love a VBAC though. I just don't know how it'll end up, and I'm not looking forward to hitting 40 weeks and having a countdown to induction again.
Just wondering if any of you had to be induced and were able to VBAC. Or what you'd choose if you had to choose between induction and planned CS.
Re: If you had to choose between induction and c/s wwyd?
I was induced with pit for my VBAC. The hospital did not allow VBACs to go past 41 weeks so at that point I had to choose induction or c/s. After speaking with my midwife, it was pretty clear that I was only willing to have a c/s if medically necessary, not just because the clock ran out. So, I chose induction. They used less pit than with a regular pregnancy but more than the tiny bit some doctors will do. We tried foley prior to that but it did not work.
Either way, I had a successful VBAC so obviously I don't regret it. But my decision was based on talking with my midwife and combing through lots of research!
Actually, you CAN be induced w/a VBAC, but most OBs will not for fear of an increased risk of UR. As long as they're not using a cervical ripening agent (ie:cervadil or cytotec), you can be induced. I have seen MANY VBACs be induced...
In fact, I was scheduled to be induced for medical reasons. I chose to be scheduled for a pitocin induction & wait for my water to break instead of breaking my water & starting pit b/c I wanted to go natural and not have the clock on me. Instead, I went into labor on my own--by my water breaking! LOL

Really? I had no idea this was the case. My doctor mentioned induction if I got to 41 weeks, but said she wouldn't consider it earlier. She also, obviously, knows it'd be a VBAC. I did have my first baby in the UK, so their methods are a little different and I'm a bit out of the loop on US practices. I was induced with Propess, which is just a type of prostaglandin placed near the cervix. So, no pit for me, thankfully. Is there not something similar in the US? Or do they just jump right to the pitocin?
I had a long postdates induction with my first that ended in a c/s. With my VBAC, I went into labor on my own at 39 weeks and had a fast labor. It was less then 6 hours from my first contraction to the time I was holding him in my arms. I never would have thought I could have such a fast and easy birth after the way my first delivery went, but I did. Every birth really is different.
Personally I would try an induction before a RCS. But you may never even have to make that choice. GL
There are several induction options for VBACs. Low dose Pitocin, amniotomy and Foley bulb are all methods that can be used for VBAC. Prostaglandins are not considered safe for VBAC because they raise the risk of rupture too much.
And yes, we do have prostaglandin inductions in the US.
At my practice, they will induce with a foley bulb or by breaking your water, as long as your cervix is favorable.
As long as my cervix shows some signs of being ready and I'm dilated enough for one of those options (I imagine I would do a foley bulb first)... I will choose induction before c-section.
If my cervix was still high and tight at the point where they would do a c-section (41.5 weeks), then I would automatically just go for the c-section. But I've already shown some changes, so that's probably not something that I'll have to worry about.
For me it would depend on how favorable an induction seemed. If my cervix didn't seem favorable at all, I'd elect to do the repeat c-section. If I was already somewhat dilated and my cervix seemed favorable, I MIGHT agree to an induction with a low dose of pitocin and by breaking water. That's a big might. I hated my induction experience with my daughter. I felt like the induction led to one intervention after another, and limited the ways I could labor. I do think it would be somewhat different this time. I don't think they'd give me as much pitocin or let me be on pitocin for as long during a VBAC, and I think that would make a huge difference.
Aw, good story! Congrats to you, that's awesome. I would LOVE it if something like this happened to me!
Ditto this. I had a failed induction that led to the C/S for my daughter and as much as I don't want pitocin again, I want an RCS even less and I know my labor might go very differently this time even if I have to be induced.

I would try natural induction myself first, then if that failed I would try hospital induction but I would personally not want to choose a CS at all, so that would be my last last last resort! All babies are different and I bet this one will come right on time with no issues!
Oh and another story to inspire you...my friend has to be on Heparin for a bleeding disorder when she is pregnant and for her first 2 kids she was induced so there was no risk of her bleeding out, well for her third she was quite convinced that her body was unable to start labor on its own but 2 weeks ago she was proven wrong, when she went into labor on her own at 38 weeks and had the baby in approx 4 hours, 20 mins of pushing! I know this was her 3rd but it just shows that you never know what is going to happen!
