We finally finished our classes, and are scheduling our final home visit/inspection. I know that we need fire escape ladders in the upstairs bedrooms, and smoke detectors/extinguishers on each floor. Other than that, what else will they be looking for? Is there anything special you did (or would do)?
Re: What will they be looking for?
You know, I think today is the first time I've ever cleaned the baseboard mouldings.
We're doing foster/adopt and are open to multiple ages. Right now, we have bunk beds (the kind that can be separate twins) with only one bunk actually built, and a pack n' play. Is it ok to assume we can furnish completely after we get a placement, or do they want to see a complete room?
They are mostly looking to make sure you live in a safe, livable, clean home. In our county, they look in each closet, garage, basement, etc--our sw joked that they had to look for actual "skeletons in our closet." They are NOT looking at the organization of your closet
In our county, our SW comes several times over a few months. For each visit, she kind of told us what she is looking for. The first one--they specifically told us NOT to get a bed, crib, paint, etc (if you didn't have stuff already) in case you were denied.
Our social worker did her "last" pre placement visit last week, checked us off, and we still don't have our crib!
Good luck!
I remember my adoption coordinator telling me to make sure my floors were cleaned. She said if you have carpet have it cleaned and make sure your floors are mopped. Another suggestion was to put outlet covers in all of the outlets. She said that will let the social worker know you are concerned about your babies safety. She said to have a snack and bottled water for them so I served chex mix and water. Hope this helps and good luck!!!
TTC June 2009-May 2011
We decided to adopt in June 2011!
HDQ born February 21, 2012
Placed on February 24, 2012
Hoping to finalize September 2012
They will be looking for safety issues. When I had my home study done, they wanted to see and test smoke detectors and extinguishers. They checked around my water heater, made sure all chemicals and medications(even over the counters) were locked up.. They wanted copies of pets rabies vaccine and registration. They checked our cars to make sure AC working, proof of car insurance, if you have any weapons they need to be locked up, if you have a pool it must be fenced, we had to have a map of the house posted and a fire escape route for entire house. I have to say it was a little daunting, but well worth it. Also every states requirements are different, so your may be different, I'm in Arizona. Hope this helps.
I know that is also required in Ohio- GL
WOW. I don't think they really looked at that type of stuff on ours at all, and she rejected any sort of snack or anything.
We did have to have our water heater set to a certain setting (110 ?) and have our meds in a locked box.
