Ok, I have an appointment on Thursday with the pedi to discuss this, but I wanted to get bumpy opinions.
My baby never spit up until 2 months old - she is three mo now and has been spitting up consistently for the last month. A tad bit excessive, but not enough to interfer with her weight gain. I've tried the Infamil AR and it does seem to help. However, isn't that just rice cereal added to formula? Couldn't I do this on my own? Has anyone had a DOCTOR OR NURSE recommend adding rice cereal to formula?
Thanks in advance for your input.
Re: Rice Cereal in formula to reduce spit-up. Dr.'s Orders anyone?
My son has severe reflux. His gastroenterologist had him on elecare (she thought he also had a protein allergy) mixed with rice cereal. He didn't tolerate it at all, but it was decided that he doesn't have a protein allergy so he is on AR now and is doing better with that and prevacid. AR has rice flour, which isn't as thick as the cereal. The actual cereal in the bottle was too heavy for my DS. Why would you want to mix it yourself rather than use AR?
We are on alimentum because of a dairy allergy but he also has reflux. He's on zantac but what really helped was (per the doc), to put some rice cereal in to each bottle. It seriously has made a night and day difference!!! He's so much happier and I'm not as freaked out with his choking.
The big reason she wanted it was b/c I guess Alimentum is less thick than other formulas. I'm not sure what Infamil AR is, so you may want to check with your pedi on that one.
The other thing my pedi said was that between 2-3 months is the prime time for reflux...it sometimes gets better after that 3 month mark.

Notes:
Ever since she has discovered her hands, she has been spitting up like crazy. Her hands are constantly in her mouth and then she gags and everything comes out. I think that is the big reason why in the overnight when she sleeps she doesn't spit up, because she isn't playing with her hands then.
My doctor said that as long as she is gaining weight and isn't doesn't show signs of reflux or incredibly fussy, and is a good sleeper at night, not to worry and start cereal if we want at 4 months.
Their pediatrician recommended adding some because of their severe reflux when they were only two months old. I felt like that was awfully early, but I was desperate, so I tried it. It was terrible. They had a really hard time digesting it and they still spit up all the time.
We haven't tried it since, and I'm sure it would be better now that they are older. I have heard that some people use oatmeal cereal instead because of higher fiber content.
My baby is a happy spitter. She spits up at random all the time of varying volumes. It drives me batty. But luckily, unlike other babies who have pain associated with reflux, it doesn't seem to bother her at all. Because there's no pain or discomfort associated and she's gaining weight, we have nothing to worry about.
We tried switching formulas but nothing really seemed to make things better. The "sensitive" formulas actually seemed to make things a little worse. Our doctor told use that we could try adding rice cereal to her bottles. We did, and it caused constipation issues. I didn't really see much improvement in the spitting, so we stopped.
I've got 3 huge unused cans of similac and I'm too lazy to take them back to Costco. Will they even take back formula (its unopened).
