Im a ftm and was wondering how babies get over stimulated and hw do you know they are over stimulated and what do you do to calm them down ? Thx ladies
They get overstimulated when there's too much going on and no down time. Like, if you keep shoving toys in their face, then they start crying so get another toy and shove it in their face. Sometimes they just need to be by themselves for a little bit. They'll cry, or turn their faces away from the stimulus. Take everything away and let them calm down.
The best way to keep babies from becoming overstimulated is to make sure they nap well throughout the day. Especially around 2 months, they really become alert and are constantly absorbing the world around them. If you don't get those naps in, you may have a LO that is exhausted, fussy, and hard to put down by the evening.

There is a wonderful book called Secrets of the Baby whisperer.....Im not sure I like it for routine of feeds and daily care but what it does do is give nice pointers on babys body language....such as turning away and eye aversion as someone mentioned about recognizing overstimulation. There are do many good pointers in there its worth buying it just for that!
Re: Over stimulated baby
The NICU gave us a list of behaviors to watch out for:
-avert their eyes
-close their eyes
-stick out their tongue (this one is tough, because DD does this when she is hungry too)
-yawning
-hiccuping
-arching her back
-squirming to get away, fussing, crying, etc.
-rigidly sticks her hands out, fingers splayed, like this:
To calm her down, I just shut up and hold her. Rocking from side to side gently works too.
