Baby birthday pool

I'm sure everyone has done something like this for football etc. Well someone suggested that I do a birthday pool for what day the baby is born, have everyone who wants to can pick a day for twenty dollars, and whoever picks the day the baby is born gets half of the total, and the other half goes to us for baby supplies.

I sure wasn't going to start it, but we thought it was a funny idea, so we passed it on to my mom who is doing my shower who said that she would use the idea, and have laughingly mentioned the idea to people when they 'claim' a day for the baby to be born on. Well we got handed a twenty dollar bill from someone we know today who said put me down for Nov 15th! (I'm due on the 8th) So, yep I guess we're doing a pool. I'm thinking the whole thing is hilarious and a great way to keep all the 'have the baby this day' routine light hearted.

Re: Baby birthday pool

  • I think this is a fun idea, but I don't think you guys should get half. That just seems like a weird charity sort of situation. But I love the baby pool idea and I hope that someone does this for us!

  • There is a pool for us going on within my family and friends too. We aren't taking a cut of the money but we are in on it.  People have to guess the date, sex (we are team green), length, and weight.  There are points assigned to each category and the person with the most points will win the pot.  Our buy in is only a buck and you can enter as many guesses as you want.  It is pretty intense and lots of people are already out since I am due in 3 days and people guessed a few days early.  But it does make things fun!

I actually really don't either, but my baby shower planners are going for it, and since the intention is for it to be like a shower game and half of it used for baby stuff, I won't complain about it. Although, I may end up donating it or something if it turns out to be a lot.
  • $20 for the baby pool is a lot. I know a lot of people that do them and the pay in is typically like $5. All of the $$ goes to the winner. If you happen to be the winner you get the $ if not you just get the baby. :)

I personally like the point system also where you get points for date, weight, length, etc.

  • We're doing a baby pool also. It was my younger brother's idea (all of my brothers are competitive and like to bet on silly things). My younger brother also came up with all the rules for it...$5 per guess, people guess gender, day, and am or pm birth time, winner gets half the money and we have to put the other half in a savings acct for the baby. DH and I aren't allowed to participate cause we know what we're having but haven't told. I think it's a lot of fun to see when people think I'll have LO!

  • I like the baby pool idea, maybe I should mention it to my family.  It would definitely help with everyone always asking me how much longer.  This way, they would just be rooting for their day, and would stop asking me if I'm still pregnant!
  • My dad's golf buddies are doing a pool... I haven't heard anything more about it but I'm sure there are some unhappy guys out there since I am already overdue

  • At my work they did a pool for someone in the past. It was a dollar to guess the weight of the baby. Then they gave the money to the new parents as a gift, and the new parents made brownies for the winner.

  • There is an app (iphone, ipad, etc) called Baby Birthday that predicts the exact day of delivery. It is much more accurate than the real due date, and it gets more accurate every day. The day it comes up with is customized to your exact history and pregnancy. It is great anyways, but it is really useful to improve your chance of winning the birthday pool game!
  • can only 1 person pick each day? or if there are multiple people for that day do they all split the winnings?

  • We are doing a pool at work with my coworkers and patients, but it doesn't cost anything to guess. We're doing date and weight and I am going to buy a little prize and leave it for the winner before I go on leave. It's really more for fun for my patients (I'm a therapist in a nursing home) than to raise money for anything. Gives them something to be excited about.

The way we chose to do our pool was allow a total of 4 guesses for each day...1 am guess each for boy and girl and 1 pm guess each for boy and girl. It will make it easier to determine a winner.
