how accurate do you think sonogram weights are?

ok let me preface by saying that I understand babies grow at all different rates and all that ... but I am curious how accurate do you think the ultrasound tech's are as far as weight. At 8.6 week sonogram, they said the baby might be a couple days behind schedule because of his weight and size being a bit low for that age. But at my 19 week sonogram, they said he was measuring 12.5 ounces. The bump fruit-comparison thingy says the average weight for a 19 week baby is like 8.5 ounces.  Just curious is my boy has undergone a growth spurt or if these measurements are really just a guess.  My coworkers said I'm gonna have to ship him to a SUMO farm hahahaha.

    The earlier ones are more accurate for dating because there are such noticeable differences in development from week to week.  The later ones can only give estimates of weight - and there is always a range of "normal" weights for any fetal age.  Really I would place too much stock into any estimate of weight.

    I have no medical basis for this opinion.

    My neice was estimated at 7 lbs before delivery, she was 9lbs10 oz

    my cousin was estimated at 7.5 and was 9 lbs 9 oz.  I think after a certain weight the Drs can't tell....

    They are approximate, because they are based on femur (or some part of the leg) length and head size.  My DS was estimated to be over 10+ lbs at birth, and the same day as that estimate he was born, at 8lb 14 oz, so quite a bit under the estimate.  He was pretty long and skinny though, and had an ENORMOUS head, so that is probably why the estimate was off so much.

     

    This baby, at our 20 week U/S was about 3/4 pound, so about 12 oz. 

    Not to mention there is a lot of growth that happens in 8-10 weeks.

    They told me he was measuring a week ahead when I had my u/s, but my midwife said you can't go by that after 18 weeks. The typical range after that point is within a week before or after the due date. (Haha I had been kind of hoping she'd change my EDD and I'd get to skip a week...)

    My DD was 5 pounds 4 oz on the ultrasound and was born the next day weighing 5 pounds 6 oz.
