Anyone else not use middle names?

with all the A/S, I keep seeing more posts about names. Does anyone else not use middle names? We use 2 last names so a middle name would just make for a really long name.

Re: Anyone else not use middle names?

  • I don't have a middle name. My parents wanted me to keep using my maiden name as a middle after I was married, so they didn't give me one. I hate it, I wish I had a "normal" middle name.

That's so funny!  You wished for a middle name, and I dropped mine to use my maiden name as a middle name!  I was so often called by my first and last name since my name is Amber (super common and also my BFF's name) and maiden name was just one syllable.  I just didn't want to give up that name!  My MIL still insists on calling me Amber Dawn though... even though she knows I don't like it... it is NOT a double name!  (sorry for the mini-vent!)

OP, we use middle names to honor family members.  If we used 2 last names, though, we would not use mn's as that would just be too much.

That is funny! My maiden/middle name is Allen, I guess I just don't like how nu-female it sounds. If I had it my way, I would have just kept my maiden after marriage and given myself a new middle!

  • Is your last names hyphenated?

IMO, and if they are hyphenated, what about if you have a girl and when she goes to get married. If she just has a FN/Long-LN then when she gets married she'll either have FN/New LN or FN/Long-LN/New LN. If you give hypothetical girl a middle name, she can choose to drop it or keep it when she gets married.

Sorry, I automatically go to "when you get married." I go by my MN and when I got married I could drop it or my madien. I wasn't going to drop either so now my name is 25 letters long. I think of things like that, so we will call our DD by her first so she won't have that problem.

  • I don't have a middle name and neither does my sister.  Both my brothers on the other hand do have middle names.

My son has a middle name but my daughter may not.  We had 2 names that we loved so we used both -- we can't even agree on one for our little girl.  I don't think it's a big deal not to have a middle name.

In your case I would less likely use a middle name since you are using 2 surnames.  Just so much.

  • My dad doesn't have a middle name- my brother is a junior and I dont have a middle name. We chose middle names for our LO (we don't know if we're having an XX or XY yet though)

Not hyphenated, but I am of Mexican origin and we use the Mom's maiden name as a "middle name" per se.  So when I got married I dropped my mom's maiden name and now have my first name, maiden name, and married last name.

My husband, also Mexican has both his mom and dad's last name as well

  • I didn't have a middle name either and wanted one so when I got married I used my maiden name as a middle name:)

I was always looked at funny when I'd say I didn't have a middle name. So we will be giving middle names to our kids :)

  • My poor DD has 2 MNs :)  b/c I wanted her to have my last name, too, but we had a different family name picked out for her MN.  So instead of giving her a hyphenated last name I just did 2 middle names.

  • I didn't have a middle name and neither did the women in my family, with the idea that we could each use our maiden names as our middle names.  I think it works out really well--I liked being able to add DH's last name without dropping any of my own.  If we have a daugher, we'll do the same but if we have a son, he'll get my dad's first name as his middle name.

  • Probably an unpopular opinion but... I don't have a middle name and neither does my sister, and we love it! We didn't use our maiden names as middle names either. It has never bothered us at all. Nobody uses them and you don't even list them anywhere. With that said if you want to honor someone or you just love the names it makes sense.
