  • I'm a nursing student and I will tell you...no smoking is okay during pregnancy. Also pot is not like cigs. I say that because pot causes cancer. That is a fact.
Cigs causing cancer is a correlation aka link, not a fact, so I do want to put that out there.
Pot is worse than cigs in my opinion because of that.

Some states randomly test mom's urine. I had a family friend in California (7 years ago) that was pregnant with her 2nd who got in deep deep trouble because she tested positive for pot. They told her the choices she had were a) stay in Cali and get her baby taken away or b) move to her mom's in the midwest and get clean. They actually put her on probation (her and her husband had previous drug issues, especially her husband for using meth. My mom's a Ped and her mom's a nurse and our mom's are really good friends incase you were wondering how she's a family friend.) So she moved home to live with her mom and got clean and had her baby here in the midwest, and even her husband was able to stop making excused to stay clean.

But the testing varies from state to state. Out here they don't randomly test you, but some states do.
I had a friend who smoked pot with both her children. They are perfectly healthy, however she has a big problem with pot and always wanting to smoke it. She will tell anyone it saved her pregnancies because she went into preterm labor with both children and also she has OCD and ADHD so she was on Zoloft for both pregnancies. In all honesty, I think the pot smoking contributed to her pre-term labor because smoking cigs contributes to it. We are no longer friends because of her pot issue, because she moved into a house and was supposed to pay the water deposit. Instead she spent it on pot when she has a son that's less than 2 years old..and just in general, I'm in health care and can't afford to be associated with that.

  • Coming over from 3rd tri... I can't believe that any woman who is going to be a mother would ever even consider smoking pot to ease morning sickness. I will be 29 weeks tomorrow and still have morning sickness every day, and I would never ever smoke weed to ease it. There are other ways to make you feel better that are safer and FDA approved.

Reading all of yalls replies are funny, yet truthful--every single one of them has caught my attention! Im not biased when it comes to pot--it can be both beneficial & non-beneficial. Opinions are like buttholes, everyone has one & they all usually stink =p haha! but I dont think it should really matter if its homegrown or federally distributed---MOSTLY because of that "legal" marijuana they have now has caused plenty of deaths in & around my area of living (VA & TN)--I honestly believe that the government is regulating the "legal" marijuana to slowly kill people (it eats the surface of lungs & turns it into goo)--I feel like Im rambling sorry =) Its just that when it comes to this subject there are alot of sophisticated debates about it & it intrigues me (both arguments)--Okay Im finished =) haha.

    Wait, whuuuuh?!

    image

Thank you. I think all of that weed is making her paranoid.

And I really hate when someone's argument is, 1) Someone I know smoked pot 2) Their baby was fine so 3) Pot is perfectly safe!

The idiocy in this thread keeps getting better and better.

  • There are a lot of FDA approved drugs that can cause problems to a fetus during pregnancy. Anti-depressants specifically are a type of drug that is used regularly during pregnancy because for most women the benefit of taking the meds and being able to take care of themselves outweighs the potential risks to the developing baby. So, in THEORY, if you have morning sickness that inhibits your ability to live your life, use of it in moderation could benefit you enough to outweigh the risks.

Of course, there are many approved, legal options for controlling M/S, so it goes without saying you should be trying those first. But if your symptoms were not able to be controlled by the anti-emesis drugs that are legal it would be prudent to try something else, especially since uncontrollable sickness can lead to dehydration and malnutrition which are both very serious during pregnancy. Personally, I'd rather take a hit of pot every once in a while than end up in pre-term labor because I couldn't stop throwing up and got dehydrated. Again, it's an extreme case, and in most situations would be completely out of the question. But the fact stands that you have to weight the benefits and risks.

You weren't rude, just kind of ignorant. No WELL PUBLISHED studies have said, "pot causes cancer" but many many well published studies HAVE said "Cigarettes cause cancer." Not that "they are linked" but that Cigarettes CAUSE cancer. So to turn around the well published studies and say something opposite makes you seem like you have no idea what you're talking about.

  • I'm was lurking here (not even pregnant yet), but I had to chime in.  Studies show that smoking marijuana during pregnancy is linked to low birth weight babies.  My ex-SIL smoked marijuana while she was pregnant (mainly because she was, and still is an idiot) and, not surprisingly, my nephew was born full term and weighing only 4 pounds.  He spent 2 weeks in the NICU.

    Oh, really?

Tell that to my grandmother who watched my grandfather bleed out of the hole in his NECK from a massive tumor on his carotid artery. He had that hole in his neck from smoking cigarettes for years. The cigarettes gave him CANCER of the larynx, and he had to have it removed. He used an electrolarynx for the rest of his life, as well as a breathing machine at night to breathe. The cancer went into remission, then came back and eventually spread everywhere and eventually killed him 6 years ago.

    You are a flipping idiot.

It is not worth her time ::runs off to smoke a cigarette since they are harmless now::

I just want to know what nursing school she is in.

  • Sweet baby cheeses. I come over here to poke my nose around since I got a BFP this weekend and I find this post. Let me preface this by saying I'm a pharmacist with 15 years of experience.

Nursing student: please keep at your studies. Marijuana AND cigarette smoke both contain carcinogens (i.e., stuff that causes cancer). This is well documented fact. Google it. Debating this with anyone makes you seem unintelligent and highly misinformed.

Second, I'm sorry, but I'm calling bull$hit on anyone who wants to equate legalized, "medical marijuana" with actual FDA-approved medication therapies. It's not apples and oranges, it's apples and Buicks. When marijuana is produced in controlled environments that must meet uniform safety and quality standards, and provide reproducible documentation on content and composition of their product, we can talk about calling it "medicine." When the product undergoes years of animal and human clinical trials to demonstrate efficacy and safety, we can talk. And when it's actually dispensed by trained professionals who've had years of education in anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and therapeutics, we can talk.

Right now, it's just dope. Might be high quality, hydroponically-grown, super sticky icky that's "dispensed" by some "caregiver" who shelled out the $$ for a license to grow and a storefront in a crappy part of town. But it is certainly NOT medicine and should not be consumed while pregnant.

  • That poor girl that posted this probably has no support system, is young, under-informed and looking for attention because she genuinely needs it. Some of you don't even BELONG on this since you obviously aren't due in April of 2012. Go back where you belong and find something better to b*tch about with your people. Geez! For those of us that do belong here, lets cut her some slack. We all have "dumb-questions." Do I think it's common sense to not smoke anything while pregnant? Yes. But, I could go on about the things pregnant women have asked me over the years that would probably be common sense to the OP. Sigh.

  • I know a girl from high school who smoked pot every day until she found out she was pregnant...she didn't find out until she was almost 13 weeks.  I believe she continued to smoke pot on and off through her entire pregnancy.  Her baby has 30+ seizures PER DAY.  He has been through multiple surgeries since he was born 9 months ago...they recently had to do surgery to completely disconnect (I don't know how else to say it?) one half of his brain to stop the seizures.  Of course it might not have been caused by the pot, but I would be surprised if it wasn't.  Who in their right mind would want to risk something like this happening to their unborn child?!?!?!  Stupid.

Don't do drugs while pregnant -- it is a horrible and sad thing to see those poor babies born as drug addicts.  They shake, they scream, they are in severe pain.  Most drug addicts refuse to quit because they can't handle going through the physical suffering of withdrawals---however, the babies are born WITHDRAWING!!!! It is horrible!!! Don't do it!!!!

I think you're referring to babies who's mothers did hard drugs like crack, meth, etc. as far as the shaking/extreme pain. Also, hospitals will not test all babies. They will only test newborns if the infant or mother has risk indicators. I am shocked at your lack of knowledge in your field. You have several spelling errors and are incorrect in many of your statements. Hospitals are encouraged, not required to report a positive toxicology screening, especially when there is suspicion of other abuse/neglect. If a mother tests positive for drugs, it is safe to assume that the infant was exposed, but a mother can also refuse a drug test (in which case they are more likely to test the newborn). Also, CPS will not take the infant for certain, just because of a lack of prescription, it depends on the case. I can't stand when people don't know what they're talking about.
