Okay ladies. I have to ask: Is smoking marijuana safe during pregnancy? Ive heard it was because it decreases morning sickness & back pains. There are plenty of stories on cannibis.com. But if its illegal in my state, would they take my kid?
I am not proclaiming that I do or do not smoke marijuana.

Re: Can I get in trouble for saying this?
I would say absolutely, 100% do not smoke anything during your pregnancy. In fact, don't ingest anything into your body that is unnecessary and/or an illegal substance.
Hate to be Debbie Downer to all the pg party girls out there, but seriously, put your baby first and don't do drugs.
I would not smoke it during pregnancy.
Did you see this? https://www.babycenter.com/404_is-it-safe-to-smoke-marijuana-during-pregnancy_2490.bc
I would never, ever smoke it while pregnant. There isn't substancial longitudinal data proving if it is safe or not. But, I don't smoke it to begin with, so I may be biased.

Well, just to play devil's advocate, people take other (legal) drugs during pregnancy. Marijuana is pretty safe on the spectrum of things (in general, not nec. w/r/t effect on the fetus), and is even legal in some states. It doesn't seem that ridiculous to me to ask whether it is safe during pregnancy. Now, the illegality in most states is another matter, but it's illegal regardless of whether you are pregnant.

It's not a ridiculous question to ask. No questions are stupid questions.
There are proven ways to help your m/s that don't involve taking illegal, unregulated drugs. There are B6 regimens, unisom, and even Zyrtec can possibly help. All of these drugs have been evaluated and are proven to be safe and okay for pregnancy.
The scariest thing about using pot to help with m/s is that you don't really know what you're getting when you buy a bag of it. It's not regulated and could contain any number of non-organic ingredients or be laced with other drugs.
So, just like with anything during pregnancy, it's important to make smart and safe decisions. Wear a seatbelt. Get a good night's sleep. Don't do drugs.
No judgment. I'm simply telling you what my (a 29 year old, married, elementary school teacher) perspective is.
But, please for your baby's sake, don't smoke pot.
It's one thing if you live in California and get a prescription from a doctor, who feels this is the best treatment plan. In that case, you are going to go to a licensed facility to purchase your pot. But buy some off the street? No.
What if you grew your own? lol
Also, I'm very qualified in my opinions because I'm an avid watcher of the show Weeds.
Hey, all in moderation! LOL I really think that if you can be sure that you are getting it from a safe source and are not abusing it, it would be fine. The same way I think having a drink while pregnant is fine. Personally, the few times I've smoked pot, I've felt ridiculously sick, so I'd never try it to manage nausea!

OMG
Are you high right now?
OP, I personally think there is a huge difference between street drugs and medical marijuana. Street drugs are very often not pure so you have no idea what you're really smoking.
Butting in from September 2011...
OP you are an idiot. Sorry that you have naive girls blowing smoke up your a$$ right now. If you are not bright enough to know that you should not smoke weed when pregnant, you are not bright enough to take care of a hamster.
I hope this is MUD because if you keep up dumba$$ questions like this, you are going to have CPS called on you before you even give birth.
Yes to this. As in, if you have to do it, don't buy crap off the street. Think "organic" not something grown with lots of chemicals as some pot is. And maybe edibles, smoking is terrible for everyone!!
(I should just note that this is info from friends who smoke, I don't). But, PS. I will be having an occasional glass of wine ;-)
Thinking more on it, I think you would be stupid to tempt fate by doing any drugs while pregnant if you really do want a healthy baby.
I met a girl when I was in HS who did smoke pot all through her pregnancy and her baby was born with a cleft lip. Could be totally unrelated, but why would you want to find out.
Shoot, last night I was trying to figure out whether or not I could continue taking L-lysine (an amino acid). I've decided there's not enough evidence, so I'm not.

I personally think that any idiot who knowingly ingests something that could be potentially harmful during her pregnancy should be tarred and feathered.
That being said...from a purely medical standpoint, it's a no-no. My SIL-to-be is a nutritionist, and she said that studies are beginning to show that marijuana use during pregnancy disrupts the embryo's (or fetus's) ability to process and properly use DHA. So if you're willing to possibly damage your unborn child's brain development for the sake of taking care of your own aches and booboos, go ahead. Otherwise, go to your doctor like normal women and get legal, studied drugs. (And to be honest, I think half the drugs that doctors hand out aren't regulated enough and need to be studied closer.)
Lurking from March 2012.....
If you've got a back ache, see a chiropractor or do some yoga.
If you've got ms that bad, talk to your doctor about some medications they can give you.
Ask yourself this...does the risk outweigh the benefit? NO...not in a millions years.
Playing the devil's advocate here (hardy har), but alcohol and cigarettes are legal as well, but they not safe for pregnancy. If cigarettes alone cause low birth weight and other complications, then hey! Let's just add some THC and some 400 other chemicals... y'know, just in case the baby thinks he/she has a fighting chance at being healthy at birth. /sarcasm

Here is a pretty comprehensive article that cites numerous studies (which you could try to look up if you want to read them yourself):

Again, I don't think this question is that shocking or disgusting, since many drugs used during pregnancy are class C and marijuana is prescribed medicinally in several states. Of course, there are the issues of purity and illegality to consider as well if you are getting it off the streets.I really think you are overreacting.
ETA: and cigs and alcohol contain different chemicals than marijuana, so the fact that they are not safe is really irrelevant.

This! LOL
Did your mom smoke when she was pregnant with you? Reread your post, you can't spell. Also, I highly doubt that there are women on here that are over 50. Most women are menopausal at that age. You must be friends with the OP. Whose day is it to have use of the single brain cell you two share?
Wait, whuuuuh?!
The fact that it's been approved as a drug means that studies have shown the benefits outweigh the risks in some situations. I don't think it's dumb to wonder whether morning sickness is one of those situations. If you take the fact that it's illegal in other states out of the equation, it's the same as asking whether it's safe to take Tylenol, Zoloft, muscle relaxers, etc. during pregnancy. I guess it is kind of dumb to ask people here instead of a doctor, but we all do that all the time.
Looks like this post has made its way around the Bump, and possibly even the Nest.
If anyone remembers, this is the same girl that asked just yesterday about smoking. While she is trying to quit and she should be applauded for that, she admitted to still having "like 3 puffs a day."
