PIO - Anyone doing their own injections?

I'm supposed to start the Progesterone in Oil injections next week (on my first IVF cycle). Due to my Husband's disability, he can't help. Has anyone out there been doing their own intramuscular injections? If so, what technique are you using/How are you doing it?

Re: PIO - Anyone doing their own injections?

  • Hi there - I am on my 2nd IVF cycle & just started my progesterone in oil intramuscular injections last night. I have always done them myself since my DH works nights every other month & both cycles he happened to be on nights when I was doing my shots. They are honestly not bad once you get the hang of them. The biggest advice I can give is make sure you ice the spot afterwards & change spots frequently - I switch sides every night. I know you can do them in either your thigh, arm or butt but I've never tried doing them in my thigh or arm. I might try my thigh this cycle as you can get sore after you've done them for a while. The first few times I watched a video on villagefertilitypharmacy.com multiple times before giving myself the shot - they have videos on how to inject all medications & they are really, really helpful! You can definitely do it- it's a piece of cake once you do them a few times!! GL to you!! :)

  • oh i did my husbands a little baby when it comes to needles.

I stood in front of bathroom mirror, put all my weight on the opposite leg and injected it, make sure you rub the spot after wards.  Good Luck!!!

  • I've done all my shots myself.  I had my nurse draw circlies on my butt with a sharpie so I knew where to aim.  I went in front of the full lenght mirror, bent over, shot and immediatly put the guaze over the area, since I take blood thinners. Massaging the area after helps to disperse the oil.

I was told no ice with PIO at all, since it's an oil and it may keep it for dispersing. My nurse told me I could heat the oil in the syringe, one of her patients said that helped, but I didn't notice a difference.

Good luck, and you can do it!!!

  • I did my own during my last IVF cycle and I found that it was not hard at all.  There are quite a few videos on youtube demonstrating how to do it.  Just search PIO shot on youtube.com and it might help.  GL!

  • I did....  I would turn to the side, put my butt on the counter (so that it's relaxed) and inject.  I had the nurse draw circles, so I knew where to put the needle.  I would then massage the area and then sit on the heating pad for about 5 mins.  youtube.com has some good videos.

  • I'm doing them in my thigh which was recommended by the ER Nurses.  The first one was yesterday (Tuesday) and my thigh is still really sore.  Today was the other thigh and I'm just dreading how bad this is going to be.  Definitely the worst part of the IVF process for me.
