What to expect at urologist appt?

Hi ladies,

I was wondering what your first appointment at the urologist was like after a "bad" SA? Anything we should be prepared for? Any good questions we should ask?

Anything would be appreciated -- I want to get the most out of this appt Thanks!

Re: What to expect at urologist appt?

  • If I remember correctly, at my DH's first appointment he spent a while going over his previous medical history with the doctor.  There was an exam as well as a repeat SA because the urologist believed that the first SA (taken at the request of my ob/gyn) didn't provide enough information.  Thankfully, his 2nd and 3rd SAs showed much better numbers than the original.

    Good luck!

  • It was very simple. There was a series of questions he asked DH while I was in the room about any pain, etc, illnesses, other med history. Then I left the room for the physical exam. After that the three of us talked for maybe 20 minutes. We made an appt to drop off the new sample for the SA that this office would do vs. the RE's office. Then we went in the following week for that follow up. DH also opted to have an ultrasound of his scrotum b/c of the varicocele to just make sure it was the garden variety...good luck!!
  • I actually didnt go with my husband because I didnt want to make him nervous.  However, my husband explained it just like the previous posters did. Did an overview of medical history, an exam, and sent him out with another SA because he felt the OB/GYN one wasnt good enough.  My husbands numbers were within normal limits, he was really sent there because his volume was slightly low and he had some white blood cells.

  • Just like everyone else said, the dr will ask about medical history. However, my dh's urologist also checked out his testicles. Turned out my dh has varicocele which could affect the quality of his sperm. They did an ultrasound a few minutes later and found out he does have enlarged veins. Dr recommended IUI or surgery (for money reasons). Later we went to see an RE and she said my dh's sperm count and mobility was fine. The RE also recommended that my dh come back and do another SA to see if things were?consistent. Good luck and hope the urologist answers any questions you might have.?
  • Ours was pretty simple and quick.  URO went over the results from the previous 2 SA's with OBGYN and RE.  He asked DH about lifestyle and medical history.  I was then asked to leave and he did a quick exam.  The uro then explained the process to us and took blood.  From there we scheduled 2 more SA and and ultrasound.  A word of warning..... the ultrasound is a bit invasive.  I did not realize that and was in the room with DH. I tell ya these things bring you closer together for sure!!!!  Best of luck to you.
