3rd Trimester

Very stupid worry....

So someone tell me to just suck it up, shut up and deal with it please! I have to go this weekend to get two steroid shots and I'm freaking out about them. I am absolutely getting them, I will do whatever I have to for my little girl. I also know that there are plenty of other women who have way more problems than what I have and I'm thankful. HOWEVER, my freaking dr (whom normally I adore!) decided to tell me that these shots are incredibly painful and that I should prepare myself!! WTF?? Seriously?! Why couldn't she just let me think they were just some tiny little shots no big deal but because she said that now I'm freaking out. Have any of you had to get one steroid shot and then go back 24 hours later and get another one for risk of preterm labor? Is there anything you can compare it to? Feel free to tell me I'm a fool too!

Re: Very stupid worry....

  • I've never had steroid shots but I've had others, I've found breathing slowly and deeply through them helps.

  • As you asked...

"Suck it up! Shut up and deal with it!" Stick out tongue

Shots suck...they suck when we're infants, they suck when we're adults, they'll suck more when we, as adults, will have to put our infants through them.

I (luckily) haven't needed the steriod shots, but I did get the Rhogam shot in the hip...stung, but at this point, anything for my LO.

Good luck, hopefully it's not as bad as what your dr said.

  • You can do this! They might hurt a bit, but they'll be over so quickly and your little one will benefit from them big time!

  • The only steroid shot I ever had was cortisone (once in the arm and once in the hip), and it burned going in and then left the area hot and bruised for 2-3 days afterward. I can't really compare it to anything, but I guess I'd say it felt like jalapeno heat or a lemon juice burn, only under the skin. Super uncomfortable but certainly not the most painful thing I've experienced.

The burn was strong enough to make my eyes water and make me say "WHOA! OW!" to the nurse, and I couldn't lie on that side for 2 nights, but it wasn't so awful that I wouldn't do it again tomorrow if I knew it was best for me and LO.

The ones they give to prevent PTL are probably quite a bit stronger, so the shot will probably make you squirm and whimper and maybe cry, but still...think of LO! And I think your doc did the best thing by giving you a heads-up.

And don't forget that you still have childbirth to look forward to. That will most certainly hurt more. lol I know, not helpful.

  • YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!!! You have rocked it this far in your pregnancy and you will for this!!!! Big Smile

I will tell you a little story about needles...

My glucose test nightmare....I am a horrible stick. They could not get the blood draw. It took 6 sticks and 45 min later they thought they had enough. It became the Labs goal to get it. On the 4th stick I had to tell the lady I was going to faint because she was jamming it around so much...her response "Oh honey I almost have it you wont faint." JAM JAM with the needle. LISTEN I AM GOING TO FAINT AND FALL OUT OF THIS CHAIR ON MY BABY BELLY!....she stopped. "oh goodness you are rather pale...no ***. They finally got some. 7:30 that night I get a call from the lab that they did not get enough to do the test. I have to redo it. I called my docs office upset and the nurse had me ask for a flight crew member to do it next time. They had to put and IV in and draw from that...boo....So 7 pokes later I understand!!

  • I had them @31w and they did not hurt more the any other shot. The site was sore a little bit but nothing bad at all! No worries!

  • I had a steroid shot recently and the nurse scared me about it too.  Honestly - it wasn't so bad.  It hurt a little teeny bit going in.  My butt was very sore the next day, but it was manageable.  Honestly, it was uncomfortable.  I may have been wincing.  But it wasn't nearly as bad as they made it out to be.  Good luck!

  • I had to get them a couple of weeks ago, and i am a total sissy when it comes to needles.  Yeah, they hurt my boo-tay, but i survived. For some reason the second one didnt hurt as bad as the first.  Maybe because a different nurse did it the second time? Anyway, you will survive = )
  • You'll soon be pushing out a tiny human! You can do it! Lol. I hate shots too but I always tell myself "Its going to hurt, but its not going to kill me." I also get blood drawn all the time for my thyroid so I've got to suck it up for needles.

  • I had them with my DD#1 and it wasn't the actual shot that hurt. It was the burning afterwards that hurt quite a bit. There is no way for you to "prepare for it". It may affect others differently. I did have a bruise on my butt the next day. Well worth it in my opinion for a healthy baby.

    Good luck!

  • From my experience with most everything, thinking about it and the time leading up to it is probably worse than what it actually is.  Sure it will feel like a pinch, then sting, and then burn and be sore for a day or two.  But I doubt it will be so bad you can't handle it.  You're just thinking about it too much.

  • I had them with my daughter. It didn't hurt... I mean, it was a pinch and a little bit of burning, but it wasn't enough to make me gasp or flinch. Suck it up! haha Suck it up because anxiety = more pain! If you expect it to hurt, it will hurt more than it normally would.

Pinch your arm. There, you're done. Not bad, is it? :P

  • I had them with my first pg and with this one. They hurt more then other shots because the liquid is super super thick. Honestly though I didn't find them painful at all. They stung a little but it really isn't that bad.

  • I have had the steroid shots! With my first pregnancy I had some issues with my bp being high. It so happened that it was very high, for the first time, at a routine ob appt I had the Friday before a 3 day weekend. My ob wanted to run labs to check for pre-e and wanted the results back asap. Since the labs were closing (it was late afternoon) for the 3 day weekend I was sent to L&D for testing and ended up having to be admitted until the results were back. Turns out the hospital kinda freaks out any time there is a concern about pre-e (especially when you're not full term) and they give you the steroid shots to help mature baby's lungs in case you have to deliver early. So, I was given the shots. My nurse told me they would be very painful but I did not think that they were. They're supposed to burn but I would compare it to maybe an ant bite. I hate getting shots so I think I had prepared myself for it to be way worse than it was and maybe that made it seem not so bad. I've been stung by a wasp before and (to me) that hurt more. Anyway, I was lucky to not have pre-e and Idid not deliver for another 10+ weeks (at 40w1d). Good luck. I hope it all works out in your favor.

  • You're about to go into labor and you're worried about the pain from two shots?  Dude.  Smile

  • Havent gotten steroid shots but I had to get the Rogham last week. I had psyched myself out because I had not gotten a shot since I was a kid and thought it was going to be bad... but it was nothing! I definitely will say that prefer shots to getting blood taken. I know steroid shots are different but just remember that it will be over quickly :)

  • now i'm not sure if these shots are different than the steroid shot i needed to get for an infection and it was not painful at all. I'm a wus when it comes to pain and it felt like a flu shot.. but like i said i'm not sure that they are the same kind

  • I've not had them for pregnancy but I have had them for injury. I'm not gonna lie to you, they do hurt pretty bad. I can't think of what to compare it to though. I found that you just have to prepare yourself and keep breathing. I found myself using the same type breathing they tell you to use for labor. The good news is the pain does not last long. Sorry you have to go through that but you and baby will be OK and that's the important thing.

  • They make your arm a little sore, but they aren't bad. I had to have a couple of shots around 30 wks because they thought my water had broken, which it didn't.

  • I've had them and they were absolutely nothing.  And they have to do them in your rear or thigh so you can't even see the needle.

  •  Thank you so much ladies!! I knew I could count on you all to slap me around a few times and give me some positives!!!  I already have a son so I know what labor feels like and then I ended up with a c section! So I totally know you are all thinking "and your worried about this silly little shot?" Answer, yes I am a complete nut job and I worry about everything! Its so stupid and I'll do anything for my kids and I am getting them no matter what they feel like but it still isn't stopping me from worrying about it!! I'll just be glad when its over. Oh and for the record I have to have a repeat c section anyways so then I'll be freaking out over the spinal!

  • I LOVE when they say that it will be painful--cuz they tell you drawing blood (which I think hurts) is just a sting so you know when they say it will hurt---its gonna hurt.

They drew artery blood about 2 weeks ago and gave me this warning (it comes deep out of your wrist and leave you bruised from wrist to about 1/2 way up your forearm) and they were right, it hurt.

Best thing I can suggest is a few deep breaths, not looking as they do it, and reminding yourself that labor is still to come so its a good practice in pain tolerance.

  • I had these with my DS.  They aren't bad, just ask for an ice pack to put on your leg before the shots.  My nurses gave me an ice pack and I put it on for about 10-15 min and I really didn't feel anything.  They were a little sore after but nothing bad.  Good thing is they should do it in the opposite leg for the 2nd shot. :) hth
