2+ Moms...How many clothes?

Below is a list of clothes I have through 6 months. DH and I expect to do laundry about 3 days a week. Do I need more than this and if so what are your suggestions? TIA!

Newborn- 2 swaddlers, 3 short sleeve onesies, 1 pair pants

0-3 months - 5 short sleeve onesies,  4 long sleeve onesies, 1 sleeper

3 months- 2 sleepers, 5 short sleeve onesies, 6 long sleeve onesies, 2 sweatshirts, 3 pants

3-6 months- 2 sweatshirts, 3 short sleeve onesies, 1 long sleeve onesies, 1 tshirt

6 months- 4 short sleeve onesies, 5 long sleeve onesies, 1 t-shirt, 2 pants

Also, do I need "newborn" and "0-3 months" or are these basically the same thing?

  • I think you are going to need more sleepers for sure (0-3 and up from there). DS spent a lot of time in his sleepers and sometimes would spit up on them during night time feeds, etc. I also would buy some Gerber 6 packs of just plain old white onesies both long and short sleeve. They are great under clothes too so you don't have to wash a whole outfit if there is a blow out, which there will be!  I would see how it goes with 0-3 and 3-6 and then go from there. You may have a much cleaner baby that I had! I would also buy some bibs if you don't have any.

  • It's really hard to guage without knowing how large your child will be and how quickly they will go through sizes. And no, Newborn and 0-3 are not the same, particularly if you have a very small baby. In our case, DS went straight to 0-3 and only stayed there for a couple of weeks. He was 10 lbs and 22.5".

You'll want to figure that you will likely need at least 2, and possibly depending on your child, 3, 4, 5, 6 (who really knows) "outfits" a day due to leaks, blow outs, spit ups, etc. For the first maybe 2 to 3 months, we kept DS in mostly sleepers and onesies with pants, so you're on the right track there. You probably just need more of all of those things...but I wouldn't go crazy until LO gets here and you know how fast they are progressing....at least don't take off tags until you absolutely need to.

  • You are probably going to need more sleepers for sure! Expect to go through a few outfits a day (poop up the back, spit up etc.) I wouldn't get too crazy with the clothes just yet though. You never know how big your baby is going to be and what you will be getting for gifts after the baby has arrived (you will probably get LOTS of clothes). This is a good starting point though for sure. Good luck!
  • You need more clothes, particularly sleepers in 0-3 for now. There were days that we'd change have to change outfits 3-4 times a day because of blowouts, spitup, pee, etc. Sleepers are easiest in the beginning (choose zippers over snaps!!!), and I'd get at least 4-5 more. I love the inexpensive Gerber zip up Sleep 'n Plays -- just be aware that they run teeny tiny.

I'd even get a pack of sleepers in NB size. Most babies can wear NB for at least a couple of weeks.

For bigger sizes, just assess as you go. You'll figure out what you need.

  • I agree you will need more sleepers. I would at least pick up a pack of the solid colored sleepers from target or walmart (I think theres 3 in a pack and it should be under $10). As pp said, you may not need newborn sizes but you may. It depends on your baby's size. DD was 8lb3oz and 21.5" when she was born and we never used newborn sizes. 0-3 months was a bit baggy at first but by her 2 week checkup she was just under 11 lb and 0-3 months was fitting well. Personally, I don't see the need to buy an additional size for 2 weeks. If DD#2 ends up being smaller I will have DH pick up some newborn size sleepers before we leave the hospital but thats it.

  • Newborn is slightly smaller than 0-3 months. You may want more of each of those sizes, since little babies can have quite explosive poops and a lot of spit-up!

I have 5 newborn sleepers and 5 0-3 months right now... I never bothered with pants with my daughter until she was crawling since it's just too much work considering how many diaper changes there are and bundeling them up with a blanket as needed is much easier... And cozier to snuggle :D

  • Yea, you will need more things, but don't worry about it until LO is here. My H was out the night we brought DS home from the hospital buying snap shirts.  Like pp said, you don't know how big your baby will be or you may just prefer one thing to another. I think your list is a good starting off point, though.

  • You will definitely need more sleepers. When are you due? I think you may need some pants and long sleeve onesies in NB size (depending on your climate).

DD pretty much lived in sleepers for ther first 3 months and wanted nothing to do with being swaddled. In the event your LO does not like being swaddled, I would get a sleep sack to keep your LO warm at night.

I think you will also need more pants (especially NB/0-3), you can usually get them in a pack at BRU/Walmart.

Do you have socks, hats, and little mittens?

  • I'd say you need more, especially in the beginning. I think you need to plan for 4 outfit changes per 24 hours if you want to be on the safe side. That means if you plan to do laundry every third day you would need 8-12 outfits minimum and they need to be full outfits, not just a onesie. I found that DS constantly had blowouts, spitups, leaks and we went through a ton of sleepers. I also don't see any pants in your newborn - 3 months? I would suggest purchasing the sleep and plays because DS lived in those for the first weeks and they are nice beacuse its a one piece outift you dont have to put any thought into it. You can get them at consignment shops for a few bucks or target has the gerber ones for like 3 for $12 I think. I would rather have too many clothes than too few.

Also your 3-6 you have 2 sweatshirts and 3 onesies? That could be dirtied in a single morning at my house! Honestly I'd at least double what you have listed. You'll also need to have a few reserve outfits in the diaper bag too.

I'm due at the end of October, so I'm thinking I basically need winter clothes at least through 3 months. Also, I have a lot of socks, hats, bibs and two pairs of mittens.

  • NB and 0 -3 mos clothes are different. I think it is helpful to have more onesies or sleepers of both sizes for the new baby. When we had LO#1, we were experimenting with bottles and the Tommee Tippee, which started with would end up more on LO's outfit than in his tummy. We went through A LOT of onesies in a day for a while until we switched to Dr Brown's.
