Pregnant after IF

New GTT procedures? Now only a 2 hour test?

At my appointment on Tuesday, my OB said that the procedures for the GTT/glucose tolerance test have changed.    Instead of a standard 1 hour test followed by a 3 hour test if you fail, there is now ONLY a 2 hour test.   If you fail it, you fail - no further testing.     and it is also a strict fasting test - requiring an 8 hour fast prior to the test (whereas with my 1 hour last time, I was just told not to eat donuts and drink OJ before coming, but otherwise, I could eat).

Is anyone else's office doing this?   Dr. made it sound like it was a pretty new thing...     On one hand, it is nice to know I will only have to do it once, no matter what.    On the other hand, I will have to get a babysitter, because there is no way DD will be able to handle 2.5 hours in the doctor's office.   Ugh.    Regardless, this was the first time I'd ever heard of this.

Re: New GTT procedures? Now only a 2 hour test?

  • I work as a phlebotomist and give these tests on a daily basis. I've never seen the 2hr GTT give for gestational diabetes. The 2 hours GTT is given for a regular diabetes screen. The one and three hour are only for Gestational diabetes. Unless they were talking about a two hour post prandial GTT. But with that there is no drink involved your blood is just draw 2 hours after eating. With the except of the post prandial and 1 hour screen they are all STRICK fasting test.  I'm really confused by what your Dr. said. That being said everyone should be there own advocate when it comes to medical care. Dr.s are only human too and make mistakes. I would double check. Good luck.

  • hmm.... no, he definitely said there was a gross drink involved (and said it was a larger volume of orange drink than I had to drink last time with my 1 hour).    Off to ask Dr. Google what the deal is.    ha.

  • My office (where I work and am a pt) just changed the policy to go to a 2 hour test.  The one hour is screening but the 2 hour is diagnostic so we decided to switch.  I think we're using up all our supply of 50gram drinks before the switch because the new ones are higher in sugar but I'm not sure what they are.

ah yes, that rings a bell.    He did say something about it being diagnostic - and that was the reason for the switch.   thanks for jogging my memory!     I know they will draw my blood at the start, after 1 hour, and then after 2 hours...     But apparently that is all I remembered.    :-)

  • I think it was YellowDaisy that said her OB had switched and only did 2hr b/c of the high fail rate of the 1hr but passing the 3hr so they just changed to only offering the 2hr as the end-all/be-all.

  • I did mine like two weeks ago and it was a one hour, but it does seem that so many fail the 1H and pass the 3H that this is a happy medium-I'm sure a lot of those ladies would have much preferred doing just one test!

  • I failed both but when I went to the 3 hr they said that they were getting ready to switch to the 2 hour.

  • My entire medical group (all the OBs in NorCal in this med group) have switched to the new 2hr GTT.  My OB said they had just made the transition recently when I had mine done.  He made it sound like this was going to become the norm for all OBs.
