who's insurance covers the surrogate?

if you are having a surrogate, who is low income and has the medical card, who's insurance pays? can I get her on mine? is seems insurance fraud-y to let the med card cover the bill when the baby goes to another family; your thoughts? TIA

Re: who's insurance covers the surrogate?

  • I don't know about your insurance, but mine specifically states that it will only cover embryo tranfer if it's being transferred back to me.  It is clearly stated in my policy that gestational carriers are not covered for any medical procedures.

If in doubt, I'd contact my insurance company - mine was very thorough when I called and asked them specific questions.

This. I'd be surprised if an insurance company covered anything for a surrogate unless she were somehow able to be added to your policy but I was always under the impression you could only add dependents and spouses/domestic partners to your insurance...

Yes  I only know one person IRL who went the surrogate route and they paid for all of the GC's expenses OOP.

  • I would think if the GC has insurance, that should cover the baby and her prenatal care. I don't think insurance companies ask all pregnant ladies if the baby is theirs.

I know on the surrogate agencies websites when looking at the surrogate mother's profiles it lists if they have insurance and with what company.

You could maybe try contacting a surrogate agency in your area and just asking.

    good luck!!

I agree.  I would do some research and call local agencies.  I would also think that their insurance would pay unless they are looking for you to pay the medical bills in case they don't have insurance.

Mine too. Mine covers IUI and IVF, but explicitly states that surrogacy is excluded.
