Choking in my sleep - anyone else?

About every 2 weeks since I found out I was expecting, I will choke on my saliva when I'm sleeping and wake myself up coughing and gasping for breath. I'm not overweight and I don't snore, so I seriously doubt it's sleep apnea. Does this happen to anyone else? Am I just nuts and this is not related to being pregnant at all?

Re: Choking in my sleep - anyone else?

  • This happens to me every once in a while (once a month?) but not just during my pregnancy.  My father has the same thing.  Not sure what is from though.

  • This happened to me last night and it freaks me out every time.  It has happened before but I have not kept track of how often.   Someone else wrote that it happened prior to pregnancy which reminded me this happened before pregnancy as well.   I don't think it is sleep apnea.  I will say the gasping seems to be worse now that I am pregnant.  I was sooo scared last night, it is truly horrible.

  • Probably acid reflux, like the other poster said.  I have reflux problems when not pregnant and they only get worse when pregnant.  Try and prop up your pillows a bit.  Talk to your doctor, there are medicines for reflux that are safe during pregnancy (if it is reflux).

  • I have this too, but it started about 8 months before I got pregnant.  I went to my doctor who said it couldn't be sleep apnea as I don't "fit the profile" (i.e. overweight/thick neck/snore a lot) and she suggested possible acid reflux, but i don't have the burning acid feeling in my throat when it happens.  She made me wear a heart monitor for 24 hours to make sure nothing was going on with my heart, which of course is fine.  She suggested it must be panic attacks in my sleep.  But I still feel that it is an apnea-type thing, because I have had it happen when I am just starting to fall asleep, and I can feel my throat "close" and then it happens.  I am going to get a second opinion and insist I have a sleep study done to rule out (or discover) apnea.
