Feeding Question

When your LO got older & you didn't have to wake them to feed at night did you stick to somewhat of a feeding schedule?  The reason I am asking is J usually eats every 3-4 hours but sometimes he will sleep beyond that point.  I am wondering if I should wake him to eat at this point or if I should let him sleep?  He is gaining weight great and is up to about where he should be had he gone full term.  TIA!

Re: Feeding Question

  • Kevin is just now STTN and I asked his nutritionist this exact question last week.  She said to let him sleep.

  • I'd ask you pedi to be sure, but if he is gaining weight well (and isn't super tiny still - which it doesn't sound like), they will probably say let him sleep.  He'll wake up when he's hungry!  Here's hoping you get some longer stretches of sleep soon!

  • Even though H is slowly gaining weight, his pedi and nutritionalist said to let him sleep.

When JS first came home, we kept him on his 3 hour schedule like the hospital had him on.  But we're slowly going to on demand feeding.  Mostly because H may eat every hour or not want anything for 4 hours.

  • Our pediatrician told us we could skip the night time feeding and just let her wake up on her own. She had us come back for weekly weight checks. This was about 3 weeks ago. Since then, she sleeps 8 hours every night and is still gaining about an ounce a day like she should. So, they are fine with it and so am I :). She seems to be in a better mood too because she gets uninterrupted sleep. I would talk to your pediatrician about it... I asked mine to let me give it a trial run and see how she did and she's done great! :)
