My rookie mom mistake: LO caught a cold from daycare. DH and I didn't think we would catch his cold because we thought our immune systems had to be much stronger than LO's. Wrong. LO managed to get DH, my mom, my dad, AND me all sick.
Please share your rookie mom mistakes so I don't feel so bad for being so clueless
Re: Rookie mom mistakes
My Rookie Mom Mistake:
I let LO sleep in our room and in our bed for far too long and caused all of us to lose a lot of sleep unnecessarily because I was afraid for him to be in his own room. We did ferber about 3 weeks ago. He cried for 27 minutes the first night, 8 minutes the second night, and then never agin. He now sleeps from 7:15pm-5:30am with zero night wakings. I wish I had known that he was so uncomfortable and that we would all sleep SO much better. He is also taking (2) at least one hour naps a day in his crib.
I had many, many rookie mom mistakes - of course I can't remember any of them
I still make dumb mistakes even with all the kids I have. You'd think I'd know better by now.
Oh man, good to know! I feel SO clueless for thinking I couldn't catch a cold from the munchkin.
Ditto this. G and I were sick 90% of the time during the first 2-3 months she was in daycare. I was so sick of being sick, and I'm certain I was miserable to be around. I'm hoping this winter won't be as bad. I'm not sure I can take another stint like that.
yeah...I'm really excited for DS to start daycare for several reasons, but I'm NOT looking forward to being sick all of the time! It freaks me out! I got a flu from my nephew once (when he was a year old) that lasted for almost 2 weeks. I was unable to do ANYTHING for at least a week. And I don't know how to be sick and take care of a sick kid.
rookie mistakes...one was to not look into how to breastfeed before attempting it. I had a TON of professional help at the hospital but it still took what seemed like forever to fix things so that it wasn't excruciatingly painful, DS was getting food, etc. Another mistake was to take too long before trying to get DS on any sort of schedule. Now he has a bedtime schedule but his napping is still pretty unpredictable.
ETA: thanks for the aluminum can tip. DS loves soda cans so we let him play with them if we hold them at the same time so that he doesn't cut himself. But maybe we should just abstain altogether.
Leaving him on our bed while I went to the bathroom thinking the pillow I put on either side of him were enough to stop him from crawling off.
And two days ago, he started to crawl onto the bottom shelf of our butcher block kitchen cart & instead of taking him out, I decided it was just so cute that I had to take a picture. when I went to put the camera back down on the table, he had climbed all the way in & rolled right out of it hitting his head on the wood of the cart. Granted it was only about a 3 inch tumble, but he was still screaming crying & had a bump.
I continually underestimate how smart, quick & strong he is!
Oooh, I've done this too, except I had totally UNBUCKLED the straps and forgot to buckle her back in. And we were on the freeway in Boston. MH flipped the f out.
I wish somebody would have told me that lanolin stains clothes - I have several shirts with lanolin stains right where my nipples are from when LO was first born and I used lanolin around the clock.
it's good to know there are others making the same dumb mistakes i have! one was thinking he wouldn't launch himself off the couch if i left him there for 2 seconds. WRONG. the other is that i let him play with a christmas ornament, thinking there wasn't much harm he could do. well it had one sharp edge and he jammed it in his eye! thankfully he didn't hurt himself too much.
and just today, the worst yet. i left my coffee cup within his reach (lukewarm). he spilled it all over, thankfully it went the opposite way of where he was so none touched him. it was pretty cold by then but either way.. BAD mommy.
I did something like this when DD was two months old when we were at the coast with both DH and my parents. We went to a restaurant and she looked uncomfy, so I undid her. Didn't realize I didn't re-do her until we got back to the vacation rental house. I was so mad at myself.
I let DD play with the tube of butt paste while I was changing her diaper and she jammed the pointy end ender her eye.
SHe had a baby black eye for two days or so.
