How rude is this??

Got a baby shower invite on facebook, so that's problem #1.  The couple is hosting the shower themselves, and how close is this to blatantly asking for gifts??

"Who's excited?! We are!!! We would love to have you at our co- ed shower this August and hope that all of the details provided are helpful.

* Sex: It's a boy!

* Gift Registry: Target and Burlington Coat Factory, also the house is a work in progress so Home Depot gift cards would be much appreciated ;)

* Gifting preferences: Home Depot giftcards help because we are building a baby room! Also, the cloth diapers and laundry items are a priority to us. Please DO NOT purchase any disposables for us.

* Used items welcome: bibs, stroller, burp clothes, clothes: 6 months+, receiving blankets, ALL- IN- ONE CLOTH DIAPERS :-)

* Registry priority: There are no duplicates between the two, please shop at whichever store you frequent/ prefer. We're grateful for whatever you choose!

For all of our out of state family and friends, this serves as an announcement. Feel free to ship something if you'd like, but most of all we wanted you to know :-)"

This is the actual invite, I don't even want to go but feel obligated :/

  • This is officially the tackiest invitation I've seen for any event ever.  I wouldn't go because of it.  But I'm really sensitive to things that I consider tacky or impolite.

ETA:  I just saw your comment about the updates they posted.  Yeah, I wouldn't be speaking to this couple again.  That is beyond rude.

  • It gets worse :( the shower is this weekend, so we've been recieving updates all week...

Shower is at a restaurant, I'm honestly surprised they are paying for anything!

"Please note: You can open your own tab from our party room if we don't have the menu items that you like; we've tried to pick sauce flavors people like etc. We will not be serving soft drinks, beer, etc. Just a heads up so you can plan accordingly."

    And most recently

"Some have asked/ commented about our registry items. Although they were not "online only" when we registered for them, some of have been clearanced out of the stores and are online only at this point. Given our inclination toward cloth diapering and natural products, a lot of research went into the items we've selected. For that reason, we will not be changing the items. I hope this does not discourage you from attending or gifting. I'm sure that if you purchase now, your gift will arrive on time. Thank you in advance for your understanding, and have a great week. See you on Saturday!"

     My mouth hit the floor!!

  • Whoa.  That is pretty crazy!  In addition to the other things already mentioned, I am laughing at the note to those from out of town... "feel free to ship something...." ha ha.

     Love it.

I'm tempted to just bring the $40 I would have spent on a gift and after me and my hubby pay for our food and beverages give them the change! I really would just not go, but the restaurant is ACROSS THE STREET from my apartment complex and I really do love buffalo wild wings! I will bring the baby and hence have an excuse to leave early...

I think you should set up a lawn chair in front of your apartment complex and give them the evil eye when they load up their car with gifts after the shower.

They couldn't bother telling the people that they were pregnant but when it comes to present time they can let that set of family and friends know. Really? That's awful. Anyone that was important enough to invite to the shower should have been important enough to know she was pregnant in the first place.

    Ugh, just tacky all around.

I really was hoping that I would get to the end of this and there would be a Gaga just kidding or April fools something... This is just crazy I agree with pp about giving disposable diapers or maybe some used 0-3 clothes since she only wants 6m +. At least you gave us something to talk about over dinner.

  • Not only are they rude they are just plain stupid IMO.

"lso the house is a work in progress so Home Depot gift cards would be much appreciated"

Um yeah- this isn't a wedding shower- the gifts are for the baby, not you.

    * Gifting preferences: Home Depot giftcards help because we are building a baby room! Also, the cloth diapers and laundry items are a priority to us. Please DO NOT purchase any disposables for us.

I registered for cloth diapers and if people asked what we really needed off the registry, I let them know that the diapers were important to us. That said, we got 20 cloth (10-25lb AIOs) and 60 newborn disposables and about 200 size 1 disposables. When people saw the cloth at the shower, many commented on them- they had not read the registry at all- oh well. The NBs and size 1s came in handy before LO fit in the cloth (he was 7lb1oz at lowest weight so they were too big at first). And even once we started on cloth I always keep disposables in my diaper bag just for space saving reasons.

Telling guests what's a good gift? (used clothes, size 6 months+?) Register for size 6 month clothes and up and if people don't want to buy off the registry be grateful for whatever they buy you. We had barely any clothes that fit LO when he got home from the hospital and have so many 6 month clothes we'll be lucky if he wears each once- that's what happens when people give you clothes. It was still very nice of everyone to give us the clothes.

I would buy them some size 0-3 month clothes and disposable diapers- but I'm mean like that .. .

I would also give something that was not on the registry!  Their rudeness deserves a sly response ;)

  • Are they the kind of people who will comment on items not on their registry, like to ask for gift receipts?  If so, I can imagine this shower will be really awkward if a guest hasn't read the entire invitation and shows up with disposable diapers...

I'm confused as to why they aren't buying people pop to have with their dinner.  Why are they even having this party?  With the money they are spending on a party for themselves they could just buy the crap they want.

    Anything funny on the registries?

No clue why they can't buy pop!  What is that like $1 per person? And since the shower is at 2:30 they are avoiding lunch/dinner.  I kinda doubt it will even be a full meal :/   I agree, they should save their money any buy what they want/need.  Honestly, I have yet to look at the registries.  I've been far too turned off by the whole situation to seriously look into getting a gift.  I will probably give cash.  I imagine others will too.  Probably will make for a boring shower.

I can only imagine since they felt the need to broadcast that you can still buy the clearanced out items they want online! They should have just designated a dollar amount for each person to give (bet they thought about it!), it's ridiculous!
