Babies: 0 - 3 Months

How many oz

My LO is 7weeks and he's drinking 5oz of milk but seem to still be hungry. I was wondering if I should feed him more or is he just being greedy? How much are your LO eating and when do you increase the oz?

Re: How many oz

  • My BF 3 week old gets 1-2 bottles of BM a day. He will eat 4oz usually. If your baby still seems hungry, try to feed him some more. Offer an extra ounce next bottle and see if he will finish it. If so, then keep offering that amount. If he still seems hungry, offer some more again.

  • My baby is 8 weeks old and will take 5 oz at most feedings.  My pediatrician said any more than 5 oz won't really fit in her tummy, so if she seems hungry after that to give her a pacifier.  Are you sure your baby is hungry or maybe fussy over something else?  If my baby cries after 5 oz of formula it is always because she's tired, but she will still take formula if I give it to her because she likes it.  Then she spits up everywhere because I've overfed her.  Lesson learned.  Have you tried topping off a feeding with a pacifier?

  • DS is 8 weeks and takes 5 oz or 6 if he goes a full night without eating (7+ hours).

  • My 6wker (-2 days adjusted) is drinking about 4oz at every feeding, sometimes a little less, sometimes more. If we are done feeding him a bottle and he still wants more we give it to him.

  • I've read that they should be getting 2-2.5 oz/lb. of body weight. ie if your LO weighs 10lbs, they should be getting between 20oz and 25oz. throughout the day.

  • DS is 5 wks 4 days and we just started him on 5oz bottles, which he is eating every 4 hrs give or take.  Most of the time he finishes, sometimes he doesnt.  Pedi said that its ok if he is taking it and not immediately spitting it up.  I also give a paci to him after, because he loves to suck.

  • It's based on weight: 2.5-3oz per pound of baby per day, so you'd divide that amount by however many feedings you have in a day. But basically, if he seems hungry, go with it. You never know when they might be going through a growth spurt and eating more often or higher amounts. If he's not spitting up too much, you're good.
